How do you feel about petite women with long hair. I have always been told that I shouldn`t wear my hair too long (past my shoulders) becasue it will just make me look shorter. Any thougths? I have been growing it out for a year and it is almost at the base of my neck ( growing out a pixie cut). Should I keep the layers so I don`t look like abig bunch of hair?
Thanks

I think long hair can work on a woman of any height. My wife is 5 foot 2 1/2 (she insists on that 1/2 inch being in there) and has auburn hair to her thigh. Looks fantastic. Crystal Gayle is 5 foot 4 and her hair is nearly to the floor.
Personally, I am not a big fan of layers. I know in some cases (extremely fine hair) it may be appropriate but generally not it long hair. You may want to read the book "Secrets For Beautriful Hair" by George Michael (he is Crystal`s hairdresser and THE long hair guru). It has lots of tips on growing your hair.
Be patient and kind to your hair as it grows. Good luck! ;)

Hey Susannah -
I`m 35, 5` 2 1/2", 110 lbs, and I have waist length hair. I have been this size since the age of 14. I don`t think the length of my hair is gonna make me look any shorter than what I am. Plus, I am not too worried about what people think of my size, it is what I am made of inside that counts.
My hubby is 6` 2", and I don`t think anything else can make me look any shorter than that. :)
Be strong and patient and let it grow out. Maybe let the layers grow out a little longer and see how you like it, then make a decission then. Good Luck!
Keep Smilin` Dorothy :)

Hi Dorthy.
I bet you look nice with your pretty waist length hair. Like I said before short people can have long hair too and pull it off just as well as the taller people.

Just think of it this way, you won`t have to wait as long for it to become waist legnth as a tall person does.

Being petite and having long hair is pinnacle of feminity. I`m sure it is short haired women telling you that b.s., because men love long hair and that makes long haired women, sad but true, "competition". You grow girl.

This was in the "From The Past:" at the top of the board and I just wanted to bump it up to add my thoughts.
This so called rule goes along with the age rules and the gender rules.
As I said before on another thread, if society told you you had to walk around with boards tied to your arms so they wouldn't bend because that looks good would you do that?
Until we trace these rules back to their creators then we should ignore them. Who are They to tell anyone how they should wear their hair?
If hair was not meant to be long on older women or shorter women or on men it would not grow long. If it can grow then who can tell you that you can't have it?
Stop listening to those rules. |

I'm of the belief that shorter women can wear their hair as they choose, just as their taller sisters can. Look at the bright side: Most men couldn't care less about a woman's height, and goals take less time to reach. Don't cheat yourself; if you desire it, grow it. My wife is 5'3"+, and has waist length hair. It looks spectacular, period! Crazy Girl above proves it, if one needs a photo. Bob

I agree. I'm 5'4" and my hair has been waist-length or longer for years. I love it and get lots of compliments on it. I've also heard some people say that only "young" women should wear their hair long. My mother is 61 (and 5'3", 110lbs.) and still has long hair. People always assume that my long hair is difficult to take care of. I tell them it's much easier than short hair. I had an experience similar to your wife's. I had short hair for a while and it was soooo time-consuming. I woke up every morning with bed-head and had to shampoo, blow it dry, and style it using styling products and a curling iron. A few hours later, it would be a mess again. I also had to pay a stylist to trim it every 4 weeks to keep the style. My long hair is so easy to take care of. It never looks messy. I don't need any styling products or tools to take care of it. Plus, a little trim once a year is all I need a salon for now.! % A` nade a p / ,bb . %!$ !!,, -% `` !.

I wondered about something like this a few months ago: would long hair make me look shorter or taller? Here are my two arguments:
(a) Shorter, because f the relative length of my body and my hair. (b) Taller, because of the "vertical stripes" effect.
Now it doesn't change my long hair goals (classic length, baby!) or decisions either way, but I guess I was just curious... lol.

I have been pondering somewhere in the same direction myself lately, after the golden proportion thing was mentioned. I realized that I will wear my hair down with some clothes and braid it with others, and if I check it with the measuring tape, the looks I prefer are closer to the golden proportion than the ones I dislike.
And then I have some friends that are tall and slim, still always looking a bit like something is off, falling down or floating away, while others, not blessed with perfect bodies, will look so well put together and beautiful. And I am realizing, it is all a question of proportion.
I am guessing that the secret to having great, long hair - as I notice it and envy it, at least - is that it works with the overall style of the person. Otherwise my great, long hair will probably mostly appeal to the fetishistically inclined (and why not, indeed, to each his or her own). These thoughts are changing the way I think about my goal hair length, about what I want to look like, and how that is going to work with who I % C`e adu a - , `b 4(` /.%% -$ ,%$! 8bp ,(

I'm 5'2.5 and I've heard that before and don't care. I love my hair long (though I wear it up every day now since my baby was born).
My hubby prefers it up and says it makes me look thinner. My hair is thick and tends to become "big" no matter how it's cut, when loose. Yet he won't let me cut it (shrug). |

What does the 62% refer to with the Golden Proportion thing? This may sound like a dumb question, but as an artist, I think of it as the body being 8 heads tall, 4 heads above the groin and 4 below, so the crease below your "bum" where classic length is would be 50% if you look at it like that. (Just trying to become more educated about it).
By the way, I don't think anyone should have short hair to make them look taller anyway if they don't want it. The same way I don't think they should have to wear 4 inch high heels. Those things are painful and equal to torture! Fortunately, all these "no white shoes before Easter sunday" rules are going the way of the garbage heap. !)) C ed``d ` %44`r #.,bb $ !,) ! (!) !!$` ,.

I agree about the short hair thing.. Nobody should be told to cut their hair to look taller. I'm 5'2" and long hair is going to make me look taller, not shorter! lol.
And golly, Susan W, you must have long legs! j/k Here we go: x^2 + x - 1 = 0 The solutions are +/- .618, roughly. If you take two consecutive numbers in the Fibonacci sequence (the higher they are, the closer the number to .618......) and divide the smaller by the larger, you'll get a version of the GP. If you divide the other way, it's 1.6 something. And on most people, the .618 is a tad bit longer than classic length, or about midthigh-ish. Hope this helps

I've grown my hair to mid-butt level a couple of times. I love how it looks, but I find it gets in the way. I sit on it or accidentally tuck it into the back of my jeans. I'm constantly aware of it. I always end up getting it cut back to waist length. I find that when it's waist-length, I don't even notice it. Did those of you who have really long hair find it difficult to get used to? Do you usually wear it up? I'm wondering if it bothered me so much because I wear mine down most of the time (and I live in a very windy city).! % A` nade a p / ,bb . %!$ !!,, -% `` !.

I feel it is none of those nosy women's buisness to tell women how their hair should be. My mother's hair use to be waist length, but she cut it to shoulder length. Then her friends wanted her to get her haircut, guess what they butchered her hair. When I use to get haircuts, I had a better hair cut then she did. She is now short in the front, sides, and back and now looks like an old lady. Those people who claim women over 60 shouldn''t have longhair, just want to make those women appear very old.
If she wants to cut it for herself, nothing wrong with that.
Ever since I have taken up the idea I shouldn't change my appearence(longhair) for anyone, I have never been better off spiritually. This is the wisdom I tried to pass on to my mother before she got her haircut, who knows maybe she will listen. She changes religions faster than crap, so who knows.! Hi Ken. I posted a message earlier this evening on a similar topic. Around here, it seems that all women head to the salon on their 55th birthday and get what I call the "Irish Mammy" -- short, tightly permed hair. It instantly ages them at least ten years. They all look like they're members of the same "old lady" cult and most of them aren't old enough to be looking like old ladies.
My mother is bucking the trend. She's 61, looks fabulous, and still has beautiful long hair. I think it's an outward expression of her youthful, independent spirit. I intend to do the same in my later years. ! % A` nade a p / ,bb . %!$ !!,, -% `` !.

You guessed it, no! It's been said in many magazines that only tall women can pull off long, curly hair; well, I've been pulling the look off brilliantly since I was a child and therefore even smaller! When I was a child, my mother wouldn't let me get a hair cut, so I was desperate for short hair. (When she was little her mother wouldn't let her grow her hair long.) I actually ended up cutting my hair short when I was in 7th grade. I regretted it and couldn't wait for it to grow back. I've worn it long ever since. I guess my point is that no one likes to be told how to wear their hair. It's an expression of our individuality and a decision we need to make for ourselves.! % A` nade a p / ,bb . %!$ !!,, -% `` !.

And it is about individuality, always has been for me, anyway. Around my junior year of high school, Vogue/Anna Wintour very famously stated that "the bob is back." Hi Grace912. I was one of those preppy girls in high school -- but the only one without a bob. I used to wonder how they avoided neck strain. All my bobbed friends parted their hair on the side and managed to hold their heads at an angle (so the hair fell across one eye) at all times. It looked like hard, uncomfortable work to me.
By the way, I'm wondering if you and I are around the same age. My junior year of high school was 1986/87 -- the beginning of the end of the preppy phase. One thing longer lengths have going for them is that they will stay where placed better than relatively shorter hair. Bringing hair from the back at waist level and placing it across the lap becomes automatic over time and it will stay there pretty well when seated. I wouldn't let the earlier experiences turn a person off more length if that was what they were after.
