Thought I'd warn all you gals (and guys) out there about the dangers of abusing your hair...
I have been bleaching my hair for years...the lightest shade of platinum blonde. You could say I'm addicted. It all went fine untill recently I re-bleached my hair. I don't do this in the proper way...everytime I do my roots I just wack the bleach all over (my hair is pretty short) DONT DO THIS

About a week ago I was combing my hair...about 4 weeks since I had last bleached it and I noticed a spot about 3cm x 3cm where the hair had completley snapped off from the roots...leaving me with awful spiky bits of brown hair about 1 cm long...yuk yuk yuk!

I'm now sporting a rather attractive combover, and making sure I never stand to the right of anyone incase it is visible. I was freaked out at first...but now I have learnt to see the funny side as it is entirley my own fault.

Some tips (which have probably been mentioned before...if so...sorry!)
1) NEVER overlap bleach when doing your roots
2)Never bleach your hair more than once in a short space of time
3)Do not think that you can get away with constant bleaching, straightning and blowdrying.
4)NEVER crash diet...this is what I did..I barely ate for a month and I think this may have contributed to my hair loss
5)Eat well, eat plently of protein....I have already noticed the difference
6)immediatley stop bleaching, blowdrying...or anything else harmful to your hair.
7)I have been taking herbal vitamin supplements and drinking plenty of green tea..wheter this does anything I dont know for sure
8) Get a decent conditioner and leave it in your hair overnight
9)Put olive oil on your hair
10)wash with lukewarm water

Hope this may help anyone who has done a similar thing...since doing all this my hair seems to be recovering...Please be careful with your hair...dont abuse it...honestly the feeling when you look in the mirror and disover a bald spot is HORRIBLE!!!

One of the top ten emails I receive is from people - men and women - who have had bleach disasters.

Unfortunately I can't help them very much and it frustrates me.  Usually they contact me when there hair is breaking off at the roots, spongy and won't dry and multicolored with duck yellow mixed in with the bright white.

At that stage there are really limited options:

1.  Go to a professional color correction specialist and try to recover some normal color.
2.  Have all the damage cut off - even shave your head and start over if the damage is root level
3.  Invest in lots of cool hats and hair accessories to cover the damage
4.  Start an aggressive repair treatment program using whatever has been known to work for your hair type, texture and current damage ranging from hard core professional deep conditioning products to coconut, jojoba, EVOO (extra virgin olive oil), sesame oil...etc.,
5.  Wait it out.  Hair does grow back.  You can amp up all the hair growing tips like taking hair vitamins, vitamin B, vitamin E and drinking lots of water to hydrate from the inside out.

Of course I tell everyone who emails me the options above and the majority don't like the answers.

Yes, you can get hair extensions IF and this is a big IF, there is hair left to attach to. Sometimes the bleach destroys hair to the point that it is impossible to utilize fusion extensions which require enough hair to fuse to.

Also, if hair is extremely damaged and/or fragile from bleach, it's possible that the roots are no longer strong enough to hold a fusion connection and even clips in may not work.

At that point its wigs, hats, hair accessories or shaving the head and starting over.

I wish there was a magic wand I could wave because I would be an instant hero.  Unfortunately there isn't a wand like that or at least not that I know about.

Finally, I suffered my own hair damage experience in December of 2012 at the hands of my long time colorist.

She decided to "pull through" the color to the ends without first talking to me about it (I would never have let her do that) and it really caused some problems with my below-the-waist length hair.

I did all the things many people do.  I first cried, then I started treating my hair daily with jojoba oil, coconut oil and some argan.  I amped up my own use of HairTopia hair vitamins which I've been taking for years, started drinking a lot more water and coconut water and really babied my hair.

It's taken 6 months, but my middle and ends are now healthy again and a lot of the damage has been eliminated.  I also had to cut off 6 inches from the ends but that too has grown back.

While it is rare for a professional colorist to do damage to your hair, it does happen.  I've been going to my colorist for 8 years with great results.  She just decided to try something without talking to me first and unfortunately I had to suffer through the results of her experimentation.

Anytime bleach and/or color which has a lifting component is used, there is potential for disaster.  All I can say is to think long and hard before you do it and be prepared for what happens if all does not go well.

I would never say not to color or bleach, just use extreme care and when in doubt go to a professional who is not interested in experimentation, especially on live human heads.  :-)
