My girlfriends practically fight over who gets to shampoo and condition my head of chest length dreadlocks once a month. On the other hand I really enjoy when they oil them once a week. I find it very stimulating.

The amount of ignorance you admit to about dreadlocks is unfortunately not unique. I think it is a consequence of a American societal prejudice toward cultural attributes of people of color and other minorities. I can't tell you how many times I get pull over by cops who spot my dreads and assume therefore I'm a pusher. There is this cultural assumption that dreadlocks and bad behavior go hand in hand and it is so tiresome. Any way, enough soap boxing - Sorry - At least you are willing to find out.Basically the locks need oil because the coiled natured of the mature dreads does not permit naturally produced oils from the hair follicles to travel far beyond the curls on the crown, much less all the way to the lock to the end. With ourt adding oil, breakage and loss are serious threats. I know that I take too much pride in my dreadlock development to not keep them healthy and full.Without going into a lot more depth that is the practical reason why I haved them oiled weekly. As I wrote, however, in response to Kevin's posting, a wonderful and equally important side-effect of this practical necessity is the very pleasurable and sensual comfort it affords by having my partners slavishly devoting all their mental and physical attention to my hair for a couple hours.> i can assure you it is a real turn on for women as

> I thought dreadlocks were quite common I know many> ethninticities and all that have> them...caucasion...chinesee...irish..you name em they> are out there!Any hair can dread, given time. But Peter's point, which I've noticed, is that the dudes sporting the most impressive dreads here in North America are people of color, more recently some Jews and some caucasians. I am fortunate to count several of them among my clients. It is great that this hansome style is taking hold. Unfortunately, Peter's experiences of being hasseled or even pulled over are ones I hear about again and again in my salon. Last week, one of my clients, (who is not a person of color, but is an olive skinned naitive Israeli with substantial, chest length dreads that I tend to) was pulled over in broad daylight by a prejudiced cop who figured my client's full dreadlocks coupled with his silver BMW meant he was in a hot vehicle dealing drugs. My client, however, is a very well connected entrepreneur of several financially successful hi-tech companies and doesn't need to get his recreational funds from drug dealing. Still the officer saw the dreads, saw the dark skin and assumed the guy was black, and in a recent BMW to boot! therefore, he's pushing drugs. To make a long story short, right now my client, is deciding whether to press charges or work with his cronies in the PD to upbraid this guy and demote him. Fortunately, in this situation my client will prevail. Think of how many more times that the poor guy with dreads is harrassed without any ability to right the wrong. So I know there is this rush to categorize dreads with negative forces in our society.

Your response amazes me! If you got hassled because of your looks, your vehicle or your chosen hairstyle, I doubt you'd just take i and not attempt to put the real jerks in their place. I think, from the comments you made that there may be a good bit of envy, for both my client's ability to develop robust dreads and for his financial prowess. How can you have too much of either one?In addition to all the times I oil and dress his locks for weekly appointments there are the countless other times I'm styling, braiding or weaving his dreads for some social event at which he's in attendance or being honored for his charitable efforts. I'm hardly the only one who benfits from his munificence and magificent dreadlocks. I'm sorry if that bothers you.

Sam, how can you possibly make such negative judgements with so little information about an individual?

> WOW! Sounds like a very satisfying relationship, why'd you split?Hi. I was married to a very young girl (20) with waist> length dark blonde hair.
