Hello!

Is it true that if you cut your hair often your hair will be stronger?

It depends on how damaged the hair is to begin with.  If the hair is extremely damaged with lots of split ends, rips and other damage, cutting it will help reboot the hair and it will be healthier and stronger overall.

Keeping hair regularly trimmed (every 6-8 weeks or so) to prevent the recurrence of damage is also a good plan.  Keep in mind there is no rule of thumb on how frequently you should get your hair cut to keep it healthy or make it stronger.

If you want your hair to grow longer, it's important to keep the ends trimmed to avoid splits and rips.

If the average hair grows 1/2" per month (some people with good genetics may grow hair at the rate of up to 1" per month) and you trim it more than once a month and more than 1/2" per month, your hair will never get longer.

In fact, if you cut if more than 1/2" per month and more than once per month, your hair will actually start to get shorter.

The best plan?  Take very good care of your hair and get just the split ends removed every 6-8 weeks which will allow you to accumulate new growth and longer hair over time.  This will also help to make hair stronger.

Other hair strengthening tips?  Eat a healthy nutritionally based food plan, keep hair hydrated by drinking lots of water and keeping hair conditioned.  Take vitamins, either formulated to help with help health or a general vitamin program for a strong body.  A healthy strong body will natural generate healthy hair.

Karen,
Great advice. I wish everybody reads this.
Some feel that not trimming is the way to go and when they decide to do so then more needs to be trimmed than they want to then the unhappy client emerges.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the feedback.  You are so right.  When maintenance is ignored a lot more hair is lost when the trims are done.

Thanks so much.
