So I have been debating on going blonde.I still think I'm going to wait a while, but I'm gathering information about it now and want to make sure I do it right.

First,here is my current haircolor.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee229/sentia30/aaaahaircolor.jpg">
Mostly light brown. It turned out a little darker in the pic then it actually is.

I have not colored my hair since AUGUST and I do not planning on coloring it probably until spring. However, because I did use a color (light brown) should I first use a color remover before attempting to go blonde?

Last time I went blonde and I didnt remove the color first, even though it wasnt that dark it took a long time to lighten and ended up orangey.

Also, what is the longest you would leave the bleach on for (some say up to 120 minutes, but isnt that too long? How long did you guys leave it on when you first did it?) And in your opinion, what is the best bleach to use?
Also, what toner colors do you recommend?

It is very important to know I'am not aiming for  platnium blonde. A little golden is fine with me.I want it to look natural, and since my hair is dark too light would be too shocking right now.
I really aprreciate it ladies! Of course if I end up doing it I will update you all and post pics. But I'm trying to leave my hair alone all winter and get it super healthy for if I decide to do this.

This is sorta around the color I want.

The best bit of advice there is about going blonde - go to a professional. Go to the bloopers section of this forum and read the home bleaching horror stories, one of which I wrote. Seriously though, with your colour it's very likely it will turn orange. But hey, if your willing to give it a go, good luck! :)

ps- don't leave the bleach on for 2 hours or your hair will melt off.

If I had to do it again, I would not go to a professional. I went to three professionals within two months, and none of them got it blonde. They just damaged my hair, a lot, to the point where I had to cut most of it off. If you find someone highly recommended for this then it may be ok.

I would first get a good trim, then use color remover to remove the color buildup. Then do a strand test with bleach to see how long you need to leave it on for (may be longer on the colored parts of your hair) and then check out the condition of the bleached strands. If you are confident in their condition and you know the timing, get someone to help you and put on the bleach. Use a 20 vol developer max, both in your strand test and when you do your head. You may have to spot bleach some areas after that, but do your best to not have to bleach your whole head again. Go get some professional products, like brushes and bowls.

You want to bleach it to a pale yellow, like the inside of a banana peel. And you will definitely need help for the back of your head and rinsing it off (watch your eyes).

Then tone it with a good toner (I am currently in love with goldwell), preferably with 10 vol developer to minimize further damage.

And remember to condition like crazy after you wash out the bleach (before the toner) and for a long time after. You may want to shampoo just once a week and condition in-between.

If any of the more knowledgable members notice any errors in my advice here please point it out. I have been doing this only for about six months and am a relative newbie.

Good luck to you!

jules i used to be your colour, and i did get my hair platinum . i decided to do it gradually by having highlights to test the colour and how my hair would be . i had to use a 30 vol bleach which eventually did cause my hair to snap in some areas im still bright blonde 3 years later after a lot of trims and good reconstructant conditioners every hair wash, now im able to have a high lift blonding cream on my roots insted of bleach. and if your not happy with the blonde it takes you your able to tone the colour. i strongly recommend you go to a proffessional as it could get tricky!!

Thank you all  for the advice!Smile

Ally,I have gone blonde by myself before and after paying someone 300 bucks to ruin my hair I'm not going to a professional again.

My hair is in pretty great condition right now.I dont even need conditioner and use a crappy shampoo and I dont have any tangles,or splits or anything. It is almost too soft and healthy  so it's kinda flat and that's why I dont use any conditioner.

Kenzzie,I used to be able to use just a high lift color too on my roots. I probably can again after the initial bleaching.

zaxwrit,
I have a question. Is the bleach that is just meant for highlighting stronger then regular bleach? Because I have done a strand test using both just highlighter and regular bleach (super blonde by Loreal)
and with the highlighter,my hair went blonde in twenty minutes.
With the reg. bleach it took over an hour to get to a very gold color (but still not quite blonde)

Now I'm wondering if I should just do alot of highlights and then eventually just do the roots?
Either way,it will be a while before I attempt.

Thanks very much for all the help. You guys rock!

Well if you know what your doing then great, if you can get it how you want it you obviously don't need a professional.

What professionals are you guys going to that can't make your hair blonde after 3 or so attempts? I wouldn't go back to them either.

Jules, I'm sorry, I don't know anything about highlighting. I used pure white bleach and developer when I bleached my hair. Others here will know more about bleach stuff :)

Ally, omg I know. Three different places. The third place got it to a very dark gold over brown, still not the lightness I wanted but better than the other two. So hubby and I did it and have never looked back.

When I had my bad exprience,I went to the biggest well known place around to have it done.
I'm talking about the kind of place that brings you tea and a magazine while you wait and cater to you.
Anyways, the guy,my stylist was a jerk.He didnt seem interested in what I wanted at all.I told him A natural looking blonde color.

I left looking like courtney Love.He bleached my entire head until white and left it like that.
I didnt realize how bad it was until out in the light of day.My hair had no color or tone at all,it was like a blank slate.
So I called the salon and they wanted the same guy to fix it for me.Instead the I told them I wanted the owner.

And while the owner fixed it,he still wasnt all that nice about it.He made it seem like it was my fault for not being more clear to the stylist, when I cant tell you how clear I was.
The other places around here are like haircutterys....so I wouldnt even know where to look for a good reputable place.

Anyways, that is why this time I'm attempting it on my own.I have bleached my hair when black before with success, even though my hair was very dry after and I had to cut alot.
I'm hoping it shouldnt be nearly so bad cuz my hair is in good shape and not that dark.

Anyways,thanks again for your help.
Zaxwrit, how long do leave the bleach on your hair?
I think I should look at different kinds of bleach cuz the super blonde (Loreal) doesnt seem strong enough.

Jules I think I left it on for about 20 mins but everyone's hair is different and needs a different amount. Your strand test will tell you for sure how long you need it on for.

Love the pic of you blonde, so pretty!

Thanks zaxwrit and Jojoswr...I have used those products before too. The Loreal Blondissimo (or however it's spelled!) really does get hair alot lighter. In fact that is what I was using in that picture. It takes my natural color easily to blonde.

I'm only worried now because I have a nice and easy perm. color from August on my hair that was lightest golden brown.I'm not sure the Loreal would be able to lift it enough without me removing the color first.

I have only ever removed a semi color with METALEX,so I'm not sure you can use bleach after removing perm. colors?

Anyways, the bleach I used to do the strand test was called Super blonde by Loreal.I'm not really sure it's a good bleach to use though.Seemed very slow acting.
Maybe I'll do a strand test with the Blondissimo or try Clairol Maxi blonde which I've had success with in the past.
thanks for the suggestion Jojoswr!Smile

You might need to use colorfix to remove the color you have now. The old perm shouldn't be a problem as long as your hair is in good condition and you condition a lot afterwards.
There is a post on here somewhere about using colorfix.

girl you better see a colorists not just a pro that is 2 diff things, i have been doing haircolor for 10 years and i have seen it all, with this process it can be a very simple one but your not going to get blonde right away, it may take several times of highlighting  it is very safe and easy that way,and a whole lot less damaging, what people dont understand is that once you have colored your hair that underlying pigment is there to stay, and sometimes you can highlight right over no problem depends on what product and how many times they used that product, so when you go to a salon to get this done they should expalin this process to you instead of (oh yeah its gonna turn out just how you wanted it) because we have no clue what you have really done to your hair, they should never bleach it out and re color it  that is double processing it and then you will have to cut it off!!!!!!and stripping the hair of color is the exact same thing as bleaching it out no different!!!!!!! if you have really dark colored hair the best thing to do is to start off with subtle carmel highlights the first time and the next time go with alittle more highlights until eventually the by the summer you will be a safe beautiful blonde and it wont be fried!!!! and the most important thing is to stick with the same person because they know your hair and how well it handles under pressure dont shop hop! you have to give them and you time to know your hair!!!!! another thing your not going to be able to lift this with color you have to use bleach, color doesnt lighten color,(to all the store color buying people just because it says blonde doesnt mean its gonna be blonde on your head and it may be a $5.oo bottle of color, but the correction cost is $75.00 STARTING OUT and dont forget the damage you have already done to it)!!!!!hope this helped you out some!!!goodluck,! @adb

Since you have been successful before, Jules if you are careful I don't see why you can't achieve the color you want particularly when you strand test carefully. BTW I really like the lighter blonde on you. Very attractive.

I'am condfident I can do it too. I have not just done it once or twice, but several times through out the years.

And of course,of course,I will do strand tests first!

I have had the most luck using high lift colors. Also,in the light,my hair is not really that dark.It has some light red and blonde tones already...and it hasnt been dyed for months.plus.I'am waiting another couple more months before doing it.
I may have to do it more then once like you jojoswr, but since my hair is in such great conditon and if I use protein,I think it will be fine.

Everyone wants to be a blonde. What about strawberry blonde, that is such a pretty color.

BTW Jules, you look beautiful as a blonde!!!

My sister is a natural strawberry blonde. The color is impossible to find in a box that looks real anyways.A good colorist may be able to make a good strawberry blonde though.

I like being brunette, and red is ok too,but the reason I want to go blonde again is because it  makes me appear softer and younger.

I have had no luck with professionals either. I only had one girl who I actually liked. She didn't make my hair blonder but did something cool with what I had. (She was too expensive unfortunetly)... I went in a while ago to get my hair lifted more... i wanted it BLONDER than it was. The chick took 20 mintues to figure out what to say to me... she suggested putting foils in... and doing my WHOLE head... I was like. Sure sounds good... long story short, she made my hair DARKER and I hated it.... I figure most are protecting themselves from damaging my hair. But I def. know what my hair can take an no one so far is willing to give it to me.

The blonde your going for wouldn't be too hard. It's not very very light and it's kinda golden... I think you could do it at home... but I'm DEF. sure a professional has to be able to do it... meh.
Good luck!

My motto is, if you're going to a professional, you have to be very very specific about what you want. I, too, am guilty of saying "I just want a nice brown colour" and "I don't know, do what you like" and stuff like that. If you want it a lighter blonde say something like "I want a whole head block colour of lighter ash/white blonde, no yellow tones, no silver tones." And I know how hard it is to find a hairdresser that will listen to you!

I no longer plan on doing it myself. (I know,I change like the wind!)

I have decided since my hair is so dark,I dont want to take the gamble.I think I COULD get it blonde myself, but not without wrecking it,and since I'm trying to grow it long,I'm just not willing to take that chance.

So now, what I want to do is get some overall highlights that are light red and some blonde like this:

Many colorists think that  a double process to go blonde is easier on the hair than continuously highlighting. You do need a good colorist or to do it yourself carefully.
I'm sure you'll look great whatever you do, Jules.

This may seem like a dumb question, but what is double bleaching? I was under the impression that it was bleaching followed by toning. Or is it bleaching followed by bleaching? Or both?

Posted By: Jojoswr
Date Posted: Jan 3, 2008 at 5:38pm
If your hair is very dark, the bleach may need to be applied more than once. Once it has reached the color of the inside of a banana it the hair can be toned.
Here is a useful site about bleaching hair to become blonde:http://killerstrands.blogspot.com
