hi, this is my first time on this site and i would like advice on how to achieve healthier hair. I'm not exactly sure how ya'll rate hair on here but i'll describe what mine is like. my hair is a few inches below my shoulders and thin in my opinion. the ends are not the best but the rest of my hair seems mostly healthy. when i was younger (until just recently) i always wore my hair in a tight ponytail and i have lots of breakage. i also have thinning hair in the font from the ponytails i would always wear. my mom has been relaxing my hair for a while but i usually go months on end without using one because it usually burns my scalp and my hair feels soft enough without one. i should also mention that sometimes when i brush or comb my hair it comes out at the roots....im very concerned about this. i wach my hair once a week with shampoo and conditioner, let it air dry, and then straighten it. when i straighten it i use pink hair lotion and then i run over it again with the straightener everyday in the morning. i usually then just pull it back into a ponytail. and sometimes i use the organic root stimulator olive oil sheen spray but only recently. i am planning on going to a salon soon to get my dead ends trimmed and to get a real haircut so that i dont have to wear a ponytail everyday. i am also planning on buying a chi straightener and using a heat protectant regularly. i would like some advise as how to get my hair much thicker and healthier. and also i would like some advice on a good hair care regimen and what products you would recommend to use. also please recommend products that will help my hair grow. thank you.

Is your hair fully relaxed now or are you transitioning? Applying heat every day that might be a problem. Try reducing that. When you see your hair when it comes out is there a white bulb on the end? If so you may be more shedding than breakage. If you don't mind me asking why do you straighten your hair everyday? I know when I was fully relaxed after I washed and flat ironed my hair it would be fresh for days with out needing a touch over.  Do you wrap your hair at night with a silk scarf? That can help preserve the style until your next wash. A good regimen starts with the inside out. For outside, wash (or co-wash), deep condition, and moisturize (not oils are moisturizers).  For inside, take vitamins, drink water, eat more fruits and veggies, and exercise. There products that help with growth, but the key is to look for ingredients that promote growth like rosemary, nettle, and sage to name a few.

my hair is mostly relaxed, and when my hair comes out it usually does have a white bulb on the end. I straighten my hair everyday because if i dont then it will be wavy. I think my straightener is no good and doesnt get my hair very straight in the first place so i have to go over it every morning to get it straight. I dont wrap my hair at night i just put it up in a bun.

Maybe wrapping your hair at night might be better.  If you make your self look like cousin it and then comb your hair around your head and tie it down with a silk scarf then your hair should keep its straightness with a little curve at the end when you comb it out in the morning. Reducing the heat would be a BIG help. Just try to find the right regimen for you and it helps the hair a lot when it is cleansed and conditioned on a regular basis.

One thing I forgot to methion is use a straightening product that helps keep the hair straight. I used the soft and beautiful extend a perm during the beginning of my transition and it helped keep my hair straight until my next wash. Or you could try culture 7 day relaxer, its suppose to keep the hair straight even through the heat and humidity.

Ladykaya is absolutely right! Listen to her.   You should really reduce that heat, its probably your biggest problem.

As for the pink lotion, which one is it?  Is it by Luster's or Motions, b/c in my opinion they both suck! Sorry for the bluntness.    If you want a good hair lotion, try Bronner Bros. Oil Moisturizer (its pink too). Their ingredients won't harm or dry the hair out.

And if wrapping doesn't keep your hair straight like you want it still, then the problem just might be the summer heat.  I know I can't go straight in the summer (well I can but it'll only last like 2 secs. with all this humidity and heat)

And oh yeah, Welcome and Good Luck on the Health!

I tried the 7 day relaxer and all it was good for was detangling. I haven't really heard of anyone loving the product. Some have said it dried their hair out and others said it made detangling worse.

If you want your hair to be healthier you need to reduce your heat use drastically.  Straightening everyday is way too much.  Try to limit your heat use to at least once a week and you should see a drastic difference.  I agree w/ merisit on the pink oil moistrizer.  The high content of mineral oil and petrolatum it contains is probably making your hair dry and could cause breakage.  Try a moisturizer like Cantu, it dosen't have those ingredients.

Hey I can understand how you feel about the hair thing. glad you came to this site. it is a wonderful read and great suggestions.

i would recommend you see a doc if you feel your hair is thinning out. if you are taking medications and stuff that can do your hair in too.

but overall i agree with the advise you got here. everyone is so nice and really helpful. i just love em!
oh yeah - stay away from the Pink Oil it will just dry your hair out and your hair will break off like you getting an involuntary hair cut. it

there are many great moisturizers out there. one thing i learned on the site is to stay away from mineral oil and petroleum products.

hope this helps.
