Subject: long to chin length?

I have always had long hair, and everyone has always complimented my long hair.
I THINK I want to get it cut short, but I am afraid that if I do, and even if I like it, if I get alot of negative reactions I will start to feel bad about it.
More than that, I don't know how my boyfriend will react.
This is making it hard for me to get up the nerve to ... just do it!
Advice?

There are pics of me on my myspace page
www.myspace.com/samanthaljones

do you think I'd look good with a chin length or between shoulder and chin length bob?
If i do this I want to make sure to pick the right style so I KNOW it looks good, no matter what anyone says    browneyedgirl832006-07-22 01:37:20

I just went picture hunting.... maybe something like this?

or this?

This is me now...

(I decided to try to be more "user friendly" with the pictures (this is quite a feat for a very not computer savvy soul...)

i really need some encouragement, I am pretty sure I want to do this, it is just all the negative opinions/ attention PERIOD I am not looking forward to...browneyedgirl832006-07-22 01:14:53

Encouragement:

You are very pretty and a shorter haircut like the pics you posted would look great.  If you keep the new look blunt, it should not be too hard to grow out if you don't like it.

Caution:

It is a big change.  You could cut first to your collar bone, then top of shoulders, then chin length.  You can always cut more, but after you cut it, that's it!

Good luck with your decision.

I think you need to approach this adventure with respect to your own wants and needs.  You're never going to be able to please everyone, especially here on this board.  You will receive various suggestions but when you get down to it, it's all up to you and only you.  I would talk about this with your boyfriend; start out with why you want to (would like a change, something easier to manage, etc.) and go from there.

You are a very good looking young lady and appear to have great hair and a face shape that would accept just about any length.  The second pic you posted, the blonde chin length bob, is one of my favorites and I think it would like great on you.

I can see why people always compliment you on your long hair as its a classic look especially when the hair is in excellent condition as yours is, and no doubt many women envy your current look - and men admire it.

Trying to read between the lines it sounds like some people define you by your present hairstyle, which appears to be making you slightly uncomfortable.  As you've always had long hair people don't know you any differently.

Its your hair and first and foremeost it has to please you, which clearly it is no longer doing as it once did - hence the desire to make a significant change.

I would say cutting it to a classic blunt-cut chin length bob would be an excellent choice as it will retain the natural shine that your hair possesses but give you the desired change.

Most people will compliment you on the change - at worst it may un-nerve a few people and make them reappraise how they see you.  That is their "problem" not yours.

Go for it

Thanks,
I did discuss it with my boyfriend... and after a little pushing he admitted that he actually prefers shorter hair but didn't want to say anything because mine is long (surprising to me because HIS hair is past his shoulders).
However, I am waiting until after next weekend because I graduate college next weekend and have alot of family coming into town... it will be their first time seeing my apartment, meeting my college friends, and meeting my boyfriend of over a year (for some of them)... they dont' really need to meet my new hair as well (especially since every woman in my family has cautioned me not to cut my hair at some point... completely unsolicited opinion, at that...)

With your face shape and chin shape - a chin length bob would look awesome on you.  The blonde pic would be perfect.
I bet you will start getting a lot of compliments on your cheekbones and eyes if you cut it - not just your hair (though I am sure you will get compliments on that still)

Thanks for all the input... while I am not completely attached to my long hair... I am attached to my brunetteness.... I have gone darker, but never lighter... but who knows what the future holds... maybe I'll get bored with shorter hair and try lighter... or darker... or get my new bob angled....

I am starting to get excited!

I don't know... I hadn't really thought about that particular style at all.
My style is usually pretty simple, so blunt cuts are what occurred to me first...
If any of you photoshop savvy folks want to photoshop my pic to give me ideas/suggestions....

PLEASE have at it!!
Not to mention I am excited... and it and don't want to wait... but I think it's less stressful to wait until the masses of family are gone...

but a pic would be fun...

if a straight on the face photo is easier... here is one... it's not great but... I don't keep alot of photos of myself! (Thats me worn out after a concert...)

My advice is to carefully choose the person who will cut it, if you decide to go for it.  Since this will be a fairly major haircut, you want someone who really has experience and will cut your hair to look its very best.

I like lovebob's wife's hair... alot...
I don't know if my hair is as thick as hers, though... I think I might go for a really simple cut first... then if I like that start experimenting with angling, color, length and ect....

I realise that I COULD end up hating this cut if I do it... but in the past 2 years... I have cut off enough hair to have had this cut... 3 times... but I haven't tried anything new... I've just gone from... mid back to waislt length... cut in layers, grown them out, cut my hair again...

I mean... it will grow back. I woudl be very surprised if I actually KEPT my hair short... but you never know...

Later she told me she was nervous but also very excited.

I did gt it cut!! I will post pics tomorrow... but I have a question that I posted on the hair politics thread... but I'll put it here too...

I got a pretty signifacant hair cut today, and the stylist was great. She made sure we were on the same page, and that I liked what she was doing at various points in the haircut, ect.
After cutting my hair, she asked if I liked the length before styling it... and I hesitated, because it was a little bit longer than the picture I gave her, and the picture Ihad in my head... which I understand, because I am sure she didn't want to cut my (formerly) really long hair too short.
So when she asked if I'd like it shorter, I said no...
But now, after wearing my hair this evening, I really wish it was that inch shorter. Partially for how it would look , and partially because it is brushing my shoulders, and that annoys me, and it wouldn't if it were a little bit shorter.
Would it be uncouth if I called the salon tomorrow and asked if she had time to trim it up? Would I need to pay again? Is it ok to offer to come in with my hair washed and combed out to make it easier?
I just don't know the nicer salon rules!! A friend told me it was ok to go back tomorrow and I shouldn't be charged... but I want to make sure!

Advice? Opinions... especially from hairdressers... but any input is welcome!

Date Posted: Aug 1, 2006 at 11:46pm

Oddly enough I never expected you to shy away from the cut.

Regaring your dilemna - yes give the salon a call and ask.  They shouldn't  be offended and providing they have the time in the next couple of days they should accomodate you you for that extra inch you want to cut.  It shouldn't be too onerous if you've gone for a blunt cut.

It is blunt cut... but she really took her time and it lays really nicely

I have to admit... I love it! But I don't want to post pics until I have it how I want it...right now it is brushing the tops of my shoulders.. and I want it a liiiiitle shorter than that...

thanks for the advice and moral support..

OH... and my boyfriend really likes it too... :)

Since it's a matter of you changing your mind and not a mistake she made, I'm not sure it would be fair to ask her to give you another haircut for free.

Congrats on your new short hairstyle!

It is exciting getting a new hairstyle isn't it.
I am doing just the opposite of you. After years of wearing my hair short, I am growing it long again and it is now well past my shoulders.

In regards to the length of your haircut, Anne is right, it was not a mistake the beautician made, but instead you just decided you want a shorter hairstyle.
I would call her and tell her you just want an inch trimmed off, not a whole new style, and see if she will go for that. She might do it for free just to have you as a possible regular customer in the future. It is good customer relations for her.
If she doesn't want to do it for free, she will most likely just charge you for a trim, and not for a full expensive hairstyle.

It seems you had a good day at the beauty salon, and I am sure you look adorable in your fashionable new short hairstyle!.

Good luck lady!

If you'd said, "This isn't as short as I wanted" then maybe you should get it cut again for free. If the stylist doesn't do what you agreed on, and you guys agree on that at the end of the cut, there's a case.

Sometimes a stylist will say, "If you still want it shorter in a few days, come back in and I'll do it for free." This isn't required. It's her being very nice. Remember, this is her job. Every hour she spends with a client is an hour she's earning money.

Call her. Be nice. Be polite. You catch flies with honey. Tell her your feelings about the cut. Compliment her. Stylists like that. Tell her it isn't as short as you want it. She may offer to cut it again. If not, ask her if she would. She's probably booked up. Offer to come in with it washed because you understand she's squeezing you in. Bring money for another cut. Maybe she'll offer it at no charge. Maybe not. Don't expect it. It is definitely not required.

She was really great about it... she said she thought I would be back... but my stylist wasn't a total stranger... she comes into the restaurant where I work frequently and had always told all of us that work at the little restaurant I work at to come to her if we wanted a haircut...

I am really happy!... I'll post pics later when my boyfriend is here to take them...

To clarify,

Brent was not banned. His accounts BrentAE and SanFranBrent were temporarily disabled because he had more than one account which is not allowed according to our current software. He was contacted by The HB Admin Team regarding this situation and they had a discussion about his various accounts and related posting issues.

It has all been worked out and Brent chose to come back as LongHairedGuy. Which the admin team activated for him after closing his other accounts. As a result, his only active account is LongHairedGuy.

Once someone is banned they should not be able to get back in either via that banned account or a new one since our new software tracks banned accounts and notifies us when the banned account has any related activity.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

1- I do like my new hairstyle
2- I do as I please with my hair... while I do welcome other opinions, there are few people whose opinions will change my mind.
3- my hair is short-er... even I think that it is hardly short enough for it to make a difference in whether it is flattering to my face. That said, Trekgod.. please be careful about your comments. A few years ago you would have made me cry.. thankfully I am a much more secure adult now. Girls are sensitive about their "features." What you said could be strongly misinterpreted. I am going to choose to believe you didn't phrase it correctly...
4- I may go shorter, may not.. if I do it will be on my own perogative.
5- I grew up in a religious organization full of long-hair loving men. I'm sure they would be abhorred. I knew that when I did this... every boyfriend I ever had, every guy friend I ever had always told me not to cut my hair... while that is a compliment, this is a refreshing change, both with they style and the attitude of my current boyfriend about it.
6- That is not the same Brent on my myspace.. but any of you are welcome to friend me.
7- peace.

That's the way it should be.  Your first few posts said how important compliments were to you, but I think your opinion is the most vital.

The problem with soliciting opinions, whether on or off the net, is, that they may not all be what you wish.

I must also give you kudos for bravely posting your pic for dissection.

I wish people would stop insulting Browneyedgirl's intelligence (and equally all other posters on the boards - including on both long and short hair.)

Browneyedgirl had by her own admission been thinking of cutting her hair shorter for some time.  On finding the site there are a number of forums - all of which have equal prominence -  the short hair board does not occupy any more screenspace than any other.  She wanted suggestions and support to cut her hair hence chooses to post on the short hair forum, which was the most appropriate for her at the time.

If she had been getting pressured to cut her hair by friends, family etc she may have chosen to post on the longhair board for support and advice on how to deal with this issue, or equally on the haircolour board if she had been wanting to go blonde or whatever - but its her choice.

Depending on the answers a person wants will determine where they post - so lets accept people have a free choice where to post and do so of their own free will.
