Here's a piccie of me when I had short hair

And you can see how I am now in my signature. I'm really tempted to go short again, I miss the convenience and the "look" of short hair. I felt I had more attitude with short hair. I'm just scared it's taken my like over 2 years to grow it out now and if I don't like it I'm stuck. Oh and I don't wanna look like a boy redhairedgirl38818.5002546296

I actually prefer your long-haired look to the short haired version -but thats not to say with a different style that you wouldn't look great with short hair.

I can understand the dilemna that you face and one way of looking at it is that a 2-3 year grow out period isn't really that long in the scheme of things and it would give you the chance to experiment with different syles on the way.

You could take it shorter in stages but then you run the risk of it being neither long nor short and therby increasing you frustration.  It may therefore be better to take the lot off in one go - if you decide that the short haired look is one that you want to sport at the present time.

I don't suppose I've been much help - but as it says in my signature - its your hair.

 Hi Sarah,

I know what You're feeling. I had almost the long hair you have now, in June 2002.

Ofcourse everyone has thier reasons for LONG VS. Short Hair!

However, back in 2002, I simply wanted to be free of long hair, because it reminded me of the bad relationship. So I bravely cut my long locks myself. I literally got so many compliments, I felt Great!! ;)

However I now sport a medium short hair style.

I love my hair as is.

Sarah, I think You look great with Short hair as well as long. You have a pretty face. I look pretty average, LOL, ok I am pretty, I like poking fun of myself,...

So if I were you I'd look at lots of hair mags, and decide(when you're ready) to go slow, with a stylist whom you trust. You could go gradually short, so you don't get shocked(if you will).

Believe me, just last Friday I wanted a shorter style, but with my wedding, I'm trying to be a "Good girl" so my stylist has some length to work with for the updo, with my tierera, and veil.

But I just may chop it(at the salon, as of March, to a shorter bob style, plus I want more violet red lowlights/and highlights). I'm 35, and not worried to experiment some more.;)

But that's my fickle nature with my hair, Sarah.

Good luck, no matter what you decide. I know You'll look gorgeous, no matter what you decide! ;)

 Take it easy,...

I know how you feel, I am forever growing my hair out and then cutting it off!  I get so bored once my hair is long!

I don't think you would look like a boy, you have a feminine and pretty face. And remember if you don't like it you won't be 'stuck' forever.

It's your decision, just make sure you can enjoy whatever you decide

Thanks everyone who replied. I'm going to leave it until the end of the month and see how I feel then. I know it's only hair and it will grow back, it just takes so flipping long to if I don't like it.

No offense but you look very dykish with that haircut. If you do go short, get a more feminine cut, and maybe not quite as short.

Posted By: trophywife
Date Posted: Feb 21, 2006 at 8:56am

It is an interesting point that Rosalie mentions.  Are the majority of women with very short hair (i.e. like traditional "boy" hair) lesbians?  Or perceived to be so by onlookers?  Or is that too stereotypical an approach?

I only have one close female friend who has properly short hair so it's difficult to know.

Are we ever going to live in a world where people can wear their hair any way they want without other people putting labels on them?

Why can't we just look at it as a short haircut without saying it makes the person something?

I just think about how for all those years of growing up how I saw all kinds of different people with all different hairstyles. I never looked at someone and thought they were something because back then I never heard of those words. My dad's nickname was Butch. Never conjured images of a short haired female. When is it going to end?

Sarah-Jane your short hair looked good. It may or may not look that good now. There might be other styles that will or won't look good. Your long hair looks good. But it doesn't matter what I think looks good.

I only want you to find what you like. I know you as Sarah-Jane who participates on a message board. I don't know you as gay, straight, or anything else otherwise. And unless you share that information on your own you'll never have to be anything else.

Thanks Robert . It is kinda like saying every girl who has very short hair must be a lesbian, which is a gross generalisation. I'm certainly not going to talk about my sexuality on here thanks very much, but I have my own reasons for not wanting to look like a dyke. If my short hair had that effect back then and funnily I did actually have a bf at the time who liked it looking that way, then I guess I'll stick with it being long for now.

I'm not having a go at anyone here, I welcome ANYONE who takes the trouble to answer a question I've asked and I DID ask for opinions on if I looked like a boy

I'd totally agree - a male friend of mine has his head virtually shaved through choice due to a severley receding hairline.  Given that he is quite well built he often gets mistaken for being "thug" like both in this country and abroad.  It severely confused the waiters in the restaurant whilst he and his wife were holidaying in France when he entered and spoke fluent French.

You remind me of a girl I met 25 years ago (yes, I'm showing my age) when my unit flew into Machrihanish, Argyll, Scotland.  We ended up spending more than the one night planned (we were on our way to Bodo, Norway).  We went on liberty to Campbeltown, the closest city and frequented a few pubs and had a few pints.  I met her in one of those pubs.  We talked and danced most of the evening.  At one point in our conversation, she said she was going to cut her long red hair.  Being the short hair lover that I am, I encouraged this.  Two weeks later, we passed back through Machrihanish on our way to the Azores.  Again, we spent more than the one night planned (due to weather again) and I saw her at the same pub sporting her new haircut.  She looked awesome!!!  I had not seen many transformations this dramatic in the past; I have seen many since then but she stands out as one of the top five of my favorites.  I fully understand this is your choice but like you have said, you have asked for opinions.  Judging from the previous picture of you with short hair, I think that you too will look AWESOME.

I'm kinda antisocial IRL, so I may not have as wide an experience as some people.  But the lesbians I've known often had long hair (either consistently, or more often than not), even the ones who identified themselves as "butch" or played the dominant role in relationships.

Also, I am a lesbian with short hair who generally wears pants and seldom any make-up, yet the majority of people seem to assume I'm straight unless told otherwise.  Although once, when I was trying to tell a hairstylist I wanted more androgynous hair, he did ask whether I was a lesbian. . . but I think that was the only time I can remember anyone ever questioning me on orientation based on my hair.  *shrugs*

There's no point saying anything if it HAS to be nice. I'd rather be honest if someone asks an honest question. If you want to look that way fine, but just so you honestly know what it looks like. Most people here are "overly polite" and fetishists(well I suppose I am too but I'm all for all different lengths of hair) so you're not going to get a straight answer from them.

I was talking to someone yesterday and I was giving her some examples of how these things happen.

Lets say you have 4 people.

2 of them live in one state or country and 2 of them live in another.

One day 2 of them are out on the street walking and one of them points to a person and says "That person looks Dykish"

1000 miles away in the other place the other 2 are also out walking and the same thing happens.

Now consider this. in each place one of the two people has never heard of a Dyke. In one place the person was pointing to a person with a mullet and in the other it was a short cut.

Yes that could happen.

So now you have 2 people who don't even know what a Dyke is supposed to be yet suddenly they have a mental image of what they were told is one. Now they're going to assume everyone with those cuts is a Dyke.

What happens when someday these people are all in the same place? Suddenly everyone with mullets or short cuts are going to be assumed to be Dykes.

You may be being honest but you could be wrong. Oh and think of this. What if Sarah-Jane was one? I do not recall seing anywhere on this site that said No Gay People.

You may be being honest. But you're only showing that you don't like gay people and that if she gets that cut it's going to bother you. And if that's not what you intend  unfortunately your words are saying otherwise. I know it's easy to be misunderstood. If you want to clarify what you've said maybe I could understand better. But based on what you said all I can assume is that you don't like them.

My Dad does similar things. He's always bringing up how certain people are always going to be poor or criminals because that's the way they are. I do not agree with him and I wish I could stop him from saying such things. But I know that it's more important that I learn not to judge people. I'm sorry for judging you. But I have to be honest too.

I'm not Gay. But I am trying to change the world and not just keep things going the way they are. Maybe you are too. But my version is different than yours.

I was going to let this just subject just drop but I've just got to answer this.

I don't mind if someone says I looked awful with my old haircut, it was ages ago anyway and I doubt I would have returned to that exact style anyway. What I do mind is judging people on their sexuality. Good grief this is the 21st century, what does it matter if someone is gay or straight? Okay I have had lots of boyfriends and I have also had one girlfriend, I might or might not have more who knows? Or I might find a nice man settle down and have kids, who cares? Surely there are more important things going on in the world than if a girl apparently looks like a dyke to some people because she happens to have short hair?

And the other thing is, when I had short hair I got hit-on far more often than now it's long and what's more by MEN!!! So work that one out?!

I am still not having a go at anyone, just giving you my 2 cents worth.

Honesty is a good policy, though we all have to remember that what, to us, feels like an honest truth may not be held as a universal truth.

And if the fetishists here are "overly polite", we should be glad!  I've known many fetishists (on HB and other boards) who didn't even bother with the niceties -_-;;; .

I am not a hair fetishist, I joined this site for help and ideas for my hair and to help anyone else I feel I can do .

What I would add though is what is wrong with being polite? I don't believe in being nasty or upsetting people, why would anyone want to do that? Maybe I'm just naive or something but I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings or "vent" just because I don't agree with someone's viewpoint.

Being a lesbian who lurks on these boards I feel obligated to respond before going back to lurkdom.  I'm actually happy when people ask such questions as long as the question is honest and not an excuse to gay bash.  Here are my two cents.

I can tell you that there are many gay women with long hair, short hair and in between hair.  This mirrors hetero women.  What I think IS different is that a gay woman with very short hair is more likely to be openly out of the closet.  Therefore, someone who is not part of the community is more likely to know that the short haired woman is gay and less likely to realize that the long haired woman is.  Being gay is one thing.  Being openly gay is another.  A discussion of this is complex and doesn't really belong here but I do think looks play a part.

Personally, I started to experiment with short hairstyles before I realized I was gay.  After I figured it out I continued to experiment with shorter and shorter styles.  I don't know if the two are related.  Eventually I found my limit at about crew cut length.  With this style I felt ugly and too boyish and discovered that it was still important to me to feel pretty.  Looking like a pudgy little boy was not a turn on.  My hair is now approaching shoulder length.  I don't think you would know that I am gay to look at me.  While I am out of the closet to family and friends, I don't advertize my sexuality.

I'll go back to lurking now.

I did cross-country and downhill when I was away last week and the one before; they were both awesome.  The Alps have got a lot of powder at the moment and the overall conditions are just brilliant so if you ever venture to Europe you should give them a try.  Personally I think Switzerland has the best cross country and indeed skiing in general, but unfortunately it's stupidly expensive.  I expect the wedding has cleaned you out for the time being!

redhairedgirl,

I am not surprised you got "hit on" more with your short cut.  I also think a great short cut screams "sexy, strong, bold, and individual", which are all great qualities in all people (men and women).  I am a straight married man who has always loved short hair.  No all women can carry off the same cut but in your case it seems to suit you.  Do what you wish and have fun with it.

About 75% take the plunge to short ,many had hair that was growing out and just like the look of short hair and do it agian. Looking at you fetures I feel that short hair is for you. In your field of dance you need to have a style that flows. Long enough to toss around but short enough to fall back into palce. I feel that a wedge would suit your face fantastic. You wolud need to have the nape area cut kinda short but leaving the sides  just covering the ears.with the front a bit longer maybe to top of cheek bone. let me know what you think of this type of style.

Sarah,

Have fun with your hair as long as you are happy. I hear so many horror stories about " pushie stylist and barber's". They remind me of a salesman that hounds you till you do the sale and regret it till it's gone, such as a cut you don't want. Be very specifec as to what you tell them to cut and what you expect. Remember it's your hair and it does not grow that fast. Don't you wish you can pull hair to make it longer and cut it at will knowing the next day you can have it long again !!!

I am glad that you feel the style suggested would work for you. Let us know if you ever decide to do the style. I would be interested in knowing if the stylist did well.

Katie thanks for thinking that style will work. If you need any more suggestions let me know.

 hey Mike!

ok, my hair is at least 2 inches above my shoulders. I'm happy with my hair, and so is my husband!

However, within a few months i would like a sexy, fun bob again. I part my hair on the left side. my hair color is natural red like Sarah's hair.

I have naturally straight hair. In humidity, my hair looks a bit fuller, with slight wave.

I like your Ideas concerning bob style hair for women.

So,....if you could suggest a popular shaping look for hair hitting the chin, maybe even an inverted bob style, unless that's getting too pase',..please let me know.

 Thanks alot Mike!

 God bLESS yOU!

 lOVE, kATIE;)

Katie, inverted bobs are OK but I like to add something special to them.If you  like bangs get some of the under bangs cut ultra short with longer hair over them. also the back yes i do like the inverted bob.If you were to get the cut that would be even with the bottom of your ears and angle torwds the chin after the ears that would look good. the back should be cut with the length being even with the base off the ears and then taperd down  as a wedge with a nape that would be clipped with a #2 blade. A nice add-on to this cut would be wispy bangs or wispy sides that would be framed to the face.Let me know what you think. I hope that I explained this cut well, if any questions let me know

Hawg

You got it! Just to be a bit more detailed Cut the bangs to be "disconnected from the cut "Like a cut within a cut. or more taper in the back so it lays closer.

Hey, Thanks to both Hawg, and Mikecuts!!!

I love the look of that pic, and your description Mikecuts too!

I know I can't make up my mind. Sometimes, I like my hair at my shoulders, but I like the inverted bob style, for something different in the near future, so I have a nice option in which to look forward to, Thank You both!

                   Love, Katie ;)

I am sure no matter what style you decide on your hair will look great Katie. just remeber two things. One is explain the details very close as to what you expect. Two DO NOT LET THEM TALK YOU into a style that may not work for you or you don't want.Talk to them before they even wash your hair. Some persons just love to cut if they are in a bad mood or having a bad day. They need to stay focused.yes it's hair and it will grow back ,but it is your hair and you have to deal with it each day. I had talked a few out of a drastic cahnge and they thanked me for it and they still come in for cuts.I have heard of a stylist when she asked the client over the ear the client said yes. The stylist did just that, except the client meant hair not cut above the ear and the stlyist did the opposite and cut the hair over the ear . Details Details Details. Katie and all.
