I used Clairol Herbal Essences XL-0 it made my hair platinum/white blonde. Actually, I'm trying to darken it know and it took so much pigment out I'm having trouble keeping med blonde color from fading.

I know most dont suggest OTC bleaching, but my hair always felt healthy after using it. I did my roots once a month for over a year and applied to the rest of my hair for only 5 minutes to 'refresh' it.

You can always get it and try a strand test. What color blonde is it now?

it is very light blonde but not quite platinum. and the roots are kind of dark blonde/light brown.

Date Posted: Sep 25, 2005 at 9:38am

One of the reasons I started using the XL-0 was I wasn't getting enough 'lift' on my roots.

What I'd do is a strand test appying it on your roots only for the whole time minus 5 minutes. Then, apply to the already lightened hair for the remaining 5 minutes.

I just did my first strand tests less than a week ago....

Just mix a 1/2 tsp of color and 1/2 tsp of developer in a glass bowl for the strand test. Don't mix all of the color and developer together until you are ready to apply it to your head.

This is what that color looked like on me. Those are just shadows in my bangs.....it was completely even. You can tell at my temples.

If you just have a little yellow in your hair that you wanna get rid of you should try purple shampoo, Shimmering lights is a purple shampoo from Clairol, it's good and cheap.

It'll make the hair look less yellow and more platinum blonde. But still if it's too dark now it won't make it look platinum/white blonde.

You might also need to bleach your roots, and tone the hair. You need a toner after bleaching to get platinum hair.

Did the herbel essence xl-0 make your hair worse as you used it over time?
And is this from a box?

Oh my god I love you! I'm going to try that. I havea  horrible time lifting my roots. I can't get them light enough to match my processed parts. I'm going to try it! However my naturally roots should be lifted a few times, I have black hair. But my reddy blonde roots... could that lift them do you think?

I didn't use a toner. I just used the Herbal Essences XL-0....http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/detail?prodid= 309986

I was already a very light ash blonde, but it wasn't lifting my med blonde roots and they were yellow.

I just went to a light/med blonde and everyone has said they like it better platinum or at the very least light ash. The color in my avatar was one of my favorites, but it doesn't seem to be my loved ones'. I guess I know what I'm doing in 4 weeks.

Any kind of violet toner or shampoo will counteract the yellow. Manic
Panic in Virgin white has violet toner added to it.

I used Herbal essence back in my highschool days...this was my hair back then...It completely fried it and it started breaking everywhere   I had to cut it to my chin and grow it out all over again.  Here is mine -

So I guess that is my word of caution!!!

Okay Look at my ends... I want the area around my face to be the same color and I just can't get it. Do you think if I use what Kelly used I could get that?
Argh it's so frustrating. And If I do. how can I keep the bleach from touching my processed parts?
Oh help...

Bambilee you should try White Chocolate by Garnier Nutrisse. It works soo well. I could never get my root area to match the rest of my hair because it would always go too yellow or something, but I use this hair dye now and keep it on my roots for like an hour just to make sure it all turns light ash blonde and it really works. I love it.

I used Herbal Essences XL-0 once and it made my hair yellowy, like those lightening kits and you're supposed to tone when you're done. Or maybe I just didn't leave it in long enough

Malibu I coulnd't find white choclate is it a bleaching kit? or something? I am going to ask at the drug store if they can get it in...

no it's not a bleaching kit, it's just hair color. It says it's a new shade so idk if all stores have it or not? All the stores I go to have it. But it works really well, I'm glad I finally found one that works.

it looks like this

and if you get it, make sure to only put it on the roots or dark parts, because it turns your hair grey. lol. well it did for me, in the areas that I accidentally got it on that were already light, but it works sooo good on the roots. I was so happy, I've been trying forever to get my roots to match the rest of my hair

just a quick q from me...when that dye lightened ur roots, were they colored or virgin roots? And did it lighten over the other darker areas of ur hair?

Thanks!

Posted By: malibubabe
Date Posted: Oct 10, 2005 at 6:04pm
yeah they were virgin roots. my virgin roots are like dark blonde/light brownish and they actually turned out lighter than the rest of my hair, and the rest of my hair was really light blonde. so it works really well. I left it on for a long time thoughmalibubabe38635.7531481481!), A

I couldnt' find it Malibu. I bought Camimole instead for now, to see if it would do a similar thing. It was an exta light natural blonde. I left it in for 40 minutes. I dunno if it worked all to well.
In some light itl ooks darker in others lighter. I dunno. everyone tells me it looks good now and I should leave it. But I can't... I need like Hair Colors Annoynoms. LOL
it looks darker against the light.
and the roots, I had a few black but nothing serious. I dunno. I'm still going to try the white choclate thing. I just gotta find it. :(

I think the reason for might be that canada sells different shades than the ones in the US...check out www.garnier.ca

Btw bambilee, seriously ur hair looks really light and pretty now!

I used that color before and it came out more neutral/ash. Just goes to show you that the color you end up with depends on what you start with.

It looks beautiful!

I thought I'd post under this. Bambilee, your hair looks great! Like you, I have black/brown roots, and I have heavily highlighted hair. The top part of my hair is highlighted to level 9, while the bottom part of my hair is between light brown to dark blonde. But I can see the roots around my crown. I just had my hair highlighted, but it didn't cover my roots well so I still have those dark roots and I want to cover them.

Malibu, would White Chocolate (which I can easily find in drugstores) lighten up my dark roots sufficiently to blend in the rest of my highlights without overlapping them and without turning them orange since I have thick hair? I'd say my overall hair looks like a light beige blonde, and I don't want to go platinum at this time. The another color that works well for me in the past is using Wella color charm white lady, they lifted my roots to a nice level 7-8 with just 20 volume developer blonde since my hair is naturally very dark. I hope White Chocolate or another color would work with roots only.

Since you guys brought it up, does White Chocolate work on darker colored hair like dark blonde? I still have some dark blonde areas that I'd like to lighten to match the rest of my highlights that are much lighter. I try to avoid any orange or brassy tones and bleach too since I no longer have any very dark colors. Thanks. $- P cn`dp0% 00BB .(4`p /.%%%,$!%( ,$!!0 2 $$

Unfortunately I don't think it would sufficiently lighten up us natural brunnettes, becuz i tried this similar extra light ash blonde color by excellence, it was the blonde supremes. I intentionally did it to make my roots orange so i could put semi red over it, and the most it turned out on my anyways was an *almost* honey blonde, ALTHO if i had done another round, i'm sure it would have lifted a little more into a more identifiable blonde.

well I tried tons of different brands of extra light ash blonde, and they always turned my hair kind of yellowy and it would turn brassy after like a week, instead of a light ash shade. But I've been getting excellent results with White Chocolate by Garnier Nutrisse. My roots are dark blonde/light brown and it actually lifts them to the color shown on the box as results!), A

Using extralight blonde colors. DOES lighten my black roots. Seriously, it lifts them so much you would never tell. So yes it woudl work, but you have to leave it in for a while. It will be a peachy/blonde color when your done. Most likely.
All this about having to use bleach is not completely true. However if you want VERY VERY VERY blonde roots, yes you'd most likely have to bleach, but if you just want to blend them in with the rest of your hair, using the extra light blonde colors, DOES WORK! Honest!

Thanks. I'm gonna try White Chocolate, bambilee! BTW, you looked great in pics entries above. Not bad job with the extra light natural blonde. The only other color I've tried on roots only was wella colorcharm countess blonde, they lifted my roots all way to light natural blonde color with just 20 vol. $- P cn`dp0% 00BB .(4`p /.%%%,$!%( ,$!!0 2 $$

So Bambilee did u leave it in a little longer than what length of time box indicates?

Posted By: malibubabe
Date Posted: Oct 15, 2005 at 10:56pm

this is what I got with white chocolate. if you look at the top it's a little different than the rest. But I keep it on my roots for like an hour and it blends enough to look good. And I use shimmer lights so my hair is basically now white. Only it's really damaged and stuff, but oh well. Then when I touch up my roots again (I'm ocd and have to put more on when I have like 1 cm) I cover up the part from before and it gets lighter

the only problem I have is the bottom layer from these brown lowlights I put in a while ago that won't seem to turn anything but yellow. It looks extra white in this photo, I think it's just the lighting

btw it didnt get that light just from the box hair dye, I had highlights 2 months ago and they used bleach

Ah, I see.  I want  mine to look like that but not sooo white. Your hair looks like glass. It's so cool! I went to another store looking for white chocolate it's not in yet. I dunno they have like only one box of dye that has the "new shade" on the box. I'm going to wait a while. I also got tipped off that one of the girls in the salon taht I work by will make anyones hair really, really blonde. For like 50 bucks. So I might go talk to her. Anywhoo. I'm still searching for that white chocolate! < A`a @de

Oh and I left the dye in for 45 mintues. I don't usually do that for any of my hair dying jobs. I usually only leave it  in for thrity.
It workes somewhat. Everyone says my hair looks natural and pretty. But alas that's not what I want. I want to have something punky... not pretty. LOL.
I'll get my hair one day. LOL

If you do use lavender tinted shampoo like Matrix so silver just dont leave it on long it will turn your bright blonde greyish purple. It will slightly cut the brassy undertones but will not actually lighten your hair Good luck

Is that why some of those old ladies have lavender hair? I find it really pretty!

Everybody keeps recommending the purple shampoos and conditioners, and I know their purpose, but they don't seem to work on me. Any ideas why? I have a purple conditioner I use -- Davines brand. I'm trying to get rid of the yellow/brass. My stylist isn't helping. Thanks for any info. There's really a lot of great info on this board about blonde hair -- the only place I've found. I've been looking for years and just now found this board.

P.S. Malibu, Bambi, and KellyH -- if you're still around -- What is your natural hair color? I ask because I'm wondering if any of you have a natural color same or close to mine. Your guys' hair looks so nice, I'm wondering if I have any hope -- I'm still trying to figure this "blonde thing" out -- I have my hair done at the salon and it's just never what I want and even if I get what I want the first few times, then it changes. Thanks guys!

My natural haircolor 'appears' to be medium ash blonde as I get new growth. Pictured was virtually my natural color until age 33 (5 years ago). When it started growing in darker I almost instantly started bleaching it.

My natural color is medium-light ash blonde, something like this

and those purple conditioners and shampoos only work if your hair is really light I think, I hardly use them though because they turn my hair grey. And now the color I use is Frosty Ash by Wella
