Subject: another place selling heat clamps
Date Posted: Mar 18, 2005 at 5:51pm

I've been searching for a cheap fusion wand/heat clamp.  I came across another wholesaler, this one in Shandong Province, China.  I don't think we've seen this company before.  Their iron also looks like the Revlon one that Doc sells. Here's what I found:

http://qianfinehair.en.alibaba.com/product/50052649/50240093 /Fusion_Clamp/Fusion_Clamps.html

The company's website is http://www.qianfinehair.com

I'll ask what their prices are...although if that other place that only has eight left will sell at a good price, it'd be easier to get eight buyers instead of ten.

Hey Leia~ I did contact this company about 3 weeks ago. For
some reason I though the companies were connected as I had
their site in with my sensual folder. I guess I must have put them
together as I was sending out e-mail's to them both looking for
this particular iron. I heard back from a guy called Paul Yip
(Revolution) , that connected me with Irene from Sensual.
I also e-mailed Qianfine back a few days ago about their
human hair .......have not heard from them yet.

I don't think this company got back to me about the irons. I
checked the mail I saved and did not see a response, now that I
really searched for it. I have e-mailed so many companies
lately on their stock........I can't keep track!!

Kewl, let's see what they have for prices.......minimum is 10
irons for this company. I e-mailed them tonight again on the
irons, so we can see if we get the same price from them.

Irene from sensual won't budge on the $98 shipping for 8 irons.
I will post her response on the Sensual thread.

I agree it still works out cheaper, but if we can get the same
deal from this company with less shipping, then it's worth
looking into.

keep us posted if they reply Leia Save~A~Stray38429.8652199074

Okay, here's what Mr. Chen from Quian Fine Hair said:

irons $48 each
T/T fee $30-$50
shipping $20 for four irons

(That last part has me confused...like maybe we don't have to buy ten?  I'll email him back.)

That doesn't sound too bad, though.

Posted By: leia1979
Date Posted: Mar 19, 2005 at 7:32pm
Another update from Mr. Chen:

$48 per iron
T/T fee approx $30
shipping $50

The minimum is 10 irons, unless we want to buy other stuff from them.  (So feel free to look around).

Otherwise, if we can get ten interested people, it would be $56-$58 per person, plus shipping within the US (probably another $5 or so).  That means for between $61 and $64, we can get fusion wands.  Anyone interested?

So, it turns out this is a better deal than Sensual, but we'll need two more people.  Can we get that many people who want some (or perhaps have the ability to resell some as well)?

Great, I think that brings us up to three (because I'm assuming since SAS has been looking into this that she's interested).

You are a cunning businesswoman!  Frankly, it would be a bit easier if we only have to come up with eight buyers.  Although, looking at Ebay, it would be quite possible to recoup the cost of having to buy an extra. (There's a single-temperature one that's at $52 with well over 3 days left, and it started at $1.)

From the pictures posted, the one on the Sensual site is for sure exactly the same as the Doc's wand - down to the RK on the side hinge thingy. It's hard to tell if it's the same on Quianfine as the picture is small. But if you girls are satisfied that they are the same wand, then that's the one you're after.

I will email Mr. Chen when I get home.

Also, I've never had PayPal charge me a fee, since I have a personal account. There is a $500 limit, so if one or two people paid by check, I think we'd avoid Paypal fees.  So right now, we need three more people; also I need a distribution volunteer because my dad would probably kill me if he knew what we were up to (not a hair-experimentation-friendly person).

Just a thought - with the fees etc. included, you're only saving about
$15 buying from this place rather than from Doc or HairCandy.
Given the trouble that you seem to be having thus far, what would
happen if one or more of the irons was faulty? Or if there were
problems with the shipping? Customer care doesn't seem to be of
highest importance here, and personally, I'd rather spend the extra
$15 buying from a reputable source.

Sorry if I'm pissing on your chips here, but I'd hate to see anyone
lose money like this. Not that I'm saying you definitely would, but it's
worth considering.

Actually, Sam, we're saving about $40 each this way.  An iron from Doc plus shipping is about $108.  We're looking at $65 each.  If it were only $15 difference, I'd buy from Doc (or Kristin...but I want temp control, hun).  I will ask Doc if a bulk order discount is possible.

I can't help it...I'm incapable of buying anything full-price.

Hey Leia~ Thanks for the update. Do you know the exact wire
charge by any chance?

The paypal fee I was taling about is.......if anyone pays through
paypal to the person doing the actual order and shipping, they
will get charged for receiving the money. That's why I included
a 2.9% paypal fee. If everyone pays with checks, then no fee as
you said.

I just accepted a paypal fee from the UK, and paypal charged
me 4.279% to get the money!! I was like what the heck!!
I thought the highest fee they could charge was 2.9%....???

So do you get charged more for accepting an overseas
payment?? I rarely use paypal, so was just wondering......

Hi there Jenny, basically if someone sends a package to the UK, the person receiving it in the UK has to pay customs on the item if it is goods to the value of $30.00 or over or if it is a gift then to the value of $65.00 or over.  I personally think its disgusting having to pay this so when I purchase stuff from the USA for example when I get my hair from Ebonyline, I've signed a disclaimer with them so I just require them to provide proof of posting and that I don't require any insurance because if they send something out to me and I require insurance, then they have to put the amount to be insured on the front of the package, this is what customs look at and this is what you get charged for, then I don't have to pay customs because there is no value on the front of the box to be insured.  xx

I totally forgot to tell Kristen and SAS when they were sending me the hair and clips so I've had to pay customs on both xx

Ah...thanks for breaking it down for me.

So you have to waive your right to insurance to avoid the fee? Again, that really sucks--you basically have no choice but to give up your own protections. I could see if it was an item that was many thousands of dollars or something, but having to pay $30 on, say, a $50 order is insane. Grrr.....  $- P cn`dp0% 00BB .(4`p /.%%%, %!%$)!$$(bp !&

OMG!! OMG,,,,,,,are you kiddin' me!! I can't believe this!!

Amanda, Hun you owe me nothing girl!! No way!!

I deliberately ticked "gift" with card & letter.....so you would not
have a customs issue!! That is CRAZY!!!
I can't believe they did this!! OMG!! I'm so mad!!

If you tick merchandise.....like most companies do, then
customs are likely to put a charge on it.

I sent one of my bridesmaids her dress to have her fit it in
Scotland before she came out to my wedding in the States. I
paid $500 for her dress then customs put a 117 pound charge
on it at her end, I ticked no boxes on the ticket, and they said
because I had the original tags on the dress, it was charged as
new merchandise.
The guy at the post office told her to tell me next time I send to
the UK to always tick the "gift" box and they would never
bother you. I have done that always in the last 5 years and my
family have never had to pay a customs charge ever.

They stop packages at random.....it's total crap!! They are only
supposed to charge merchandise items not gift items.
I can't believe this!!
Amanda, can you dispute this at the Post Office?

SAS - As far as I'm concerned chick, I can't wait to pick it up and I'm not bothered about paying the extra money because it was such a bargain from you in the first place.  When you have to pay the extra customs they actually stick you a sticker on the package after customs has had it and it says on that even with gifts, if they are over $65 you still have to pay customs, I think that is disgusting xx

Anyone here ordered from China before? I know I've never been charged customs on anything I've bought internationally, but that's only been from the UK or Canada. FWIW I see a whole lot more UK hairboard members mentioning customs charges than US ones. Sherrie and Fina, don't you guys buy form China a lot? D'you get tagged with customs?

Also, I know Doc used to have a "bulk order" (not wholesale) section of the website where you could buy large amounts of one product for less than retail; i.e. 3 jars of microrings for $60, etc. I can't find it on the new site, but I don't know if theyhaven't put up a page for it or they just don't sell i that manner anymore. Mr. Chen said the T/T fee was approx. $30.  I will ask about customs...it had crossed my mind.  Obviously if the customs fees are out of this world, there's no point.  I send stuff to Canada all the time at work, but they have a customs value of zero.

And according to Paypal, I can receive up to $500 a month with no fees...the account resets on the 8th of each month.

Well, luckily the customs charge for Amandas hair was a false
alarm. It ended up being for another package she got from the
US. She should get the hair hopefully tomorrow, so fingers
crossed she doesn't get charged again. [[[pretty please]]]]

The only thing with customs charges is that they put the
charges on after the package has been shipped. You are not
going to know until it arrives in the US, what they are going to
do. I think this package with 10 irons would be a little too big of
a package to pass as a sample. I think. It really depends on
customs. Which side of bed they got out of that morning.

I am going to call Paypal tomorrow and find out what there deal
is about fees? I rarely use it so can't understand the fee
differences. Hopefully they will shed some light on that for me.

We still need a few more people to be able to get this off the
ground or we can go with Sensual on 8 irons if we fall short on
buyers. What are you girls thinking you want to do? Is anyone
considering just getting it from Docs?

I asked Mr. Chen if his US customers have had to pay customs fees.  He said that once we paid DHL $50 we wouldn't have to pay anything else shipping and/or customs wise.

Let us know what Paypal tells you....I've received money from Sherrie and Rae without being charged any fees.

UPDATE: I called DHL, who told me to call US Customs...they seem to think we would be charged a customs duty of 6.5% for the irons, which is about $31 total.  If the total value was less than $200, there'd be no customs fee.  I'll tell Mr. Chen what I've learned.

This is proving more difficult than I thought, but it's really educational, if nothing else.  The only things I've ordered internationally before were PH and my ao dai from Vietnam...each was only worth $40 or so, therefore no fees.

that. I have dealt with a few companies that told me no customs

Leia~ I would rather try and stick to US if possible because
Canadians may have to pay customs twice....coming into the
US then to Canada. Or if you post on Quinns please let
Canadians know they may have extra charges.

I am waiting for Staceys response about Canadian customs.

I contacted Paypal and they said I would have to pay a cross
border fee to accept a Canadian purchase. She said it's a daily
rate which fluctuates daily at about 1%. She said I can figure
3.9% + transaction fee

Leia~Paypal told me that with a Personal account you cannot
even except more than $500 a month or you have to upgrade
to a Premier account. She also said with a Personal account
you cannot accept debit or credit card charges....only bank
transfer and e-check only. Once you upgrade to Premier you
then get charged up to 2.9% + 30c transaction fee for all
payments...bank transfer, e-check, debit or credit card
purchases. So now we know there is no way around the Paypal
fee.

Well, you can always pay by check ......and pay no fees!!

Hi.  Because this whole thing sounds so confusing, I'd totally understand if you wanted to keep the order to those in the US.

As far as Canada customs goes, it's really inconsistent.  My fiance and I buy a lot of things from the US and the UK and on occasion we do get stuck paying customs fees.  Generally, if the item is marked gift this doesn't happen.  There's no logic to it, really.  I've talked to people while disputing my customs fees [and eventually paying them ] and they tell me pretty much the same thing.  Luckily, it doesn't happen that often.

Oh, and the voltage in Canada is the same as in the US.
But like I said, if this is too much of a hassle, I wouldn't be offended at all.  I was just planning on buying a heat clamp sometime in the near future and thought that I may be able to save a little bit of money.  Looking for any opportunity I can find, especially with the crappy Canadian exchange rate.

Well, it's possible to avoid the Paypal fees, just not easy, and probably not likely.  It would mean no credit/debit cards and one or two people would have to mail a check.  So, at any rate, very difficult.  I do not have a bank account associated with Paypal, so I use my credit card for it.

So let's see... 8 irons at $50 ea + $98 shipping + 6.5% customs fees= $524  (they said they'd absorb the T/T fee, didn't they?)

Divide that by 8 people to get $65.50 each

Shipping is probably $5.75 for Priority mail...round up to $71.50

And a 3% (roughly) Paypal fee...about $2.15...that's $73.65

Let's round that up again to $74 each  (did I miss anything?)

Compared to an iron from Doc (approx. $108 including shipping), that's still a savings of over $30.  We might need to add another dollar each for bank fees or something.

As for Canadian customs, a single iron might be a small enough thing to pass with little or no charges.  I don't know.  US Customs told me that $200 or less was exempt here....maybe the Canadians have something similar.  And whatever happened to NAFTA?  Free trade, people!

Stacey, if you're willing to pay a few more dollars (and whatever the currency conversion is), I think it's cool.

Here's how Canadian customs works....if it's sent as a gift, you just pay the taxes and duties over $60 CAN.  The irons and $50 US currently work out to $60.87.  So you'd pay taxes and duties on 87 cents.  Since we're not a business, company, or association, we can send it as a gift...it just needs a card that says it's a gift...so Stacey...Happy Easter!  =)

Stacey~ Please don't think I'm trying to say no to you because
really I'm not at all. I would just feel bad if customs were to slam
you at your end too. I would absolutely put gift on the package
as I always do to help people avoid customs. It has always
worked for me. You just have to be prepared just incase. I just
thought it would keep things simpler to try and stay within the
US. You are very welcome to join in with us.....so please don't
feel you're not.....okay dokey. As Leia said you will have to pay
a couple bucks more on the shipping charges.

Leia~ Maybe you missed this.........

Leia~ On an e-mail last week Sensual talked about absorbing
the wire charge. So I e-mailed her back to confirm this. This
was her response

I couldn't remember and was too lazy to go looking. Sorry, I'm still having a hard time just getting the board to play nice with my browser.

So add another $3.75 to the total....
$77.75 each

Now I understand why Doc charges $100.leia197938437.5944675926

Leia~ Nothing says Happy Easter like a heat clamp

Save A Stray~ I just wanted you to know that I wouldn't feel even the slightest bit bad about not being included.  I realize that this entire order is very confusing to begin with and if it makes things simpler I wouldn't be sad about being exempt.  I just don't want you to feel bad about me feeling bad. This board in general seems like a very welcoming place.
Like I said, I'm just trying to save a couple of dollars where I can (I'm a student and tuition is not a pretty thing).  Besides that, most of the times I've gotten slammed by customs its been with orders from actual businesses (like Dr.Locs).   It's always a risk, so it's all good either way.

No problem Stacey!!

Well, we could wait for 2 more people and go with Mr Chen. He
is $48 cheaper on the shipping and $2 cheaper on the irons.
So 10 of us would save another $5. Is it worth the wait?
Whatcha think girls?

Soooo....lets say customs does charge us, then what are we looking at $ wise? And just for the record, Ive always had to pay t/t fees on both ends of the transaction between my bank and my Korean suppliers bank. Which is generally around $ 25 each bank. Im alittle concerned because I dont know all the 'possible' charges that 'could' be involved yet! $- P cn`dp0% 00BB .64b" !( %($%,!)$!!!!8br 0

Really Sherrie, so you have had to pay both ends. I have never
had to do that from India.....only one way. Well, I just e-mailed
Irene to ask what the charges normally are one way. I know Mr
Chen had originally said $30-50 for wire fee then I read approx
$30 from the last post about that. So I guess we need a definite
fee from him to be able to see where we stand.

Gosh, this is getting to be much higher than we had originally
thought . I am wondering if it is worth all the trouble??

Leia~ Would you mind sending one more e-mail to Mr Chen to
finalize the wire fee for us (both ways?).........thank you kindly

Sherrie...in that $77.75 per person quote, I included customs fees.  The friendly customs agents at the San Jose International Airport told me we would be charged 6.5% of the value of the irons.  They were a little confused on what I was talking about product wise, but apparently there's a "hair styling" section, and they classified it a curling iron.  I said that was close enough.

SAS...Mr. Chen was guessing at how much we'd have to pay on our side for T/T fees.  He wasn't going to charge us again for his side.

My personal vote is to go with Sensual simply because we have eight people, and I'm not sure where we're going to find two other interested people.  It's probably only going to mean a difference of $8 or so, and I'm not sure if it's worth the effort to try and round up more people.  I'm hoping the eight we have are all still interested.

I am still in!!

If Mr.Chen is not going to charge us both ways then he is
definitely the best deal.

If I recall, Rae was not able to order for a week or two,,,,,,,so
we will have to wait a few for that. So we have time to try and
get 2 others......just a thought.

I am up for whatever girls!!

Leia~ You said you are not able to take this order on right?
I have no problem doing the ordering and shipping, if that's
okay with everyone,,,,,,,unless someone insists they do it. HaHa

I'm so glad everyone's still interested!  So here's the new math for ordering from Mr. Chen:

10 irons at $48 ea + $50 shipping + 6.5% customs fees + $30 T/T = $591.20 (Mr. Chen claims we won't have to pay customs, but it's better to over-estimate)

$59.12 + $5.75 US mail + (2.9% + 30c) Paypal fee = $67.05

My shipping estimate is based on Priority mail weighing 2 pounds or less.  If it's more than two pounds, then shipping jumps to $7.70 for a Priority box.

Anyways, I think we're looking at about $69 each (a little extra to cover any packing materials, etc.)

Leia,

I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here for a moment.

Has anyone done business successfully with Mr. Chen? Why is SAS
not getting responses to her emails? This is an overseas purchase so
what is the time frame to expect these irons? What is the recourse if
they do not arrive? What if they arrive damaged or some are non-
functioning?

Earlier today I let SAS know after I did a bunch of reading of this
thread that I pulled out. The main reason is that I don't want to risk
all this money for a $20 savings and then have her feel responsibile.
I couldn't live with myself if she or anyone felt they needed to repay
me if these things didn't arrive.

This is over half a grand of money that's going overseas. I,
personally, would not risk it.

Just my two cents. Good luck to those who still want to go forward. If
they do get here, it's a heck of a deal. $- P cn`dp0% 00BB .(4`p /.!( ),))%!,,%$<"b .4

Hey girls hold on to your panties....Im checking with my Korean supplier to see what he will do for me on their dual sided iron. According to the price list the price each is $50 if you purchase 10. I have a hair order about to be shipped out so lets see what we can do with them. I do know that I trust the hair21 company, as Ive done business with them for years. Well chickies, I got a response from my supplier and they dont have any of the 280 irons in stock with the correct plug type that we need in the USA. The ones they have in stock we would need a convertor/adaptor to use. He gave me a great deal at $50 each including EMS postage for 10 irons. But totally useless to us without the right plug and didnt know exactly when they would have the ones we need in stock. So much for that idea! I think it might be wise for everyone to just dish up the $20 or $30 extra, bite the bullet and purchase from a supplier here that we know we can trust, and know what the final cost will be. On one of these overseas shipments we could end up getting hit with a customs charge and cost us all more in the long run. And then if there are any faulty irons it could be a hassle if not impossible to make a return or exchange.
