hey sweetie
Do you have an effective but natural solution for controlling frizz? One of my chick friends has shoulder-length, straight, coarse Asian hair. Frizz is a real problem for her. She doesn't want to use product... she wants a natural, chemical-free solution to the problem. Any suggestions?

I'm soooo sorry to hijack your thread MissP....
Hi Deeganluvr,
I am Asian with mid-back length hair that also frizzes like crazy if I don't control it. I have several solutions for frizz that work for myself and many Asians. My philosophy is healthy, natural hair WITHOUT the use of chemicals or damaging heat styling... just the correct shampoo and conditioner choices and some natural or commonsense home treatments. Long and healthy hair. I'm growing mine out to around mid-thighish.
And I know I can help you out. Please email your questions to me at blueangelflame@yahoo.com . I look forward to discussing our hair issues.

Hi Mizz P
Again, I sincerely apologize for hijacking your thread. After a hundred-and-something posts, this is only the first time I have ever felt the need to do so. I feel a sense of duty towards my fellow Asian ladies and I really hope you are not offended, MizzP. I look forward to seeing you around on the boards and I hope we continue to get along in the future.

wht kind of shampoo and conditioner do u use anais?
|
Posted By: AnaisSatin

Hi Banks
I do a multistep-- here is the complete routine in order:
(1) prewash oiling with coconut oil (2) Kirkland Marine Algae Shampoo from Costco (or Paul Mitchell Awapuhi is just as nice, has hair safe gentle ingredients such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate) (3) diluted apple cider vinegar rinse (weekly). It's about 1/2 cup diluted in a 20oz soda bottle of water. (4) Suave Professionals BioBasics conditioner (contains silicones)
Sometimes I substitute the prewash oiling with a discontinued conditioner called Pure-A-Teas (contains no silicones). It's found at Dollar Tree stores if you're lucky.. I bought every last bottle over here and I love using it for CWC (condition-wash-condition). Gives great slip for detangling. I haven't had to use a comb since wash day (just fingers)
Curly hair has very similar needs as Asian hair, so I think you'd do well with a similar routine as mine. The key is moisture, moisture, moisture.

Prewash oiling: using 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to work into your hair the way you would do with a leave in conditioner. Except you'd wash it out with your regular shampoo and finish off with your regular conditioner. Be sure to shampoo very well. Coconut oil can be bought from a health food store or even Walmart. (Just ask ;D )
I think Tresemme has a shampoo that has sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) (make sure it's laureth and not lauryl). The bottom line is the main ingredient SLES (almost always listed second on the ingredient list; water is always first) The cleanser SLES is gentlest on hair and longhairs including myself swear by this or something equally gentle.
Suave Naturals has some great conditioners if your hair doesn't like silicones. Suave Professionals conditioners work well too if you have medium to coarse hair.
What's your hair type?

Sometimes it matters... cooking type oils sometimes are pressed/extracted differently, and will have a higher acid content. Although I don't see why that's bad. I put vinegar on my hair all the time and that's acidic too! The same deep oiling instructions on page 1 of this thread will apply for coconut oil.. you can use it for deep oiling or for leave-ins though.

4!d ( b p Me too!
My hair used to be "stuck" above the waist, breaking off there. Since I straightened out my hair care, it's been growing, and the ends look great. Here's what I do for my hair:
I never wash with shampoo anymore, only conditioner, such as VO5 Hydrators or Free Me Freesia, Suave Daily Clarifying conditioner, or White Rain Extra Body. If you buy these, make sure you get the exact product, as all these brands make lots of different products, some of which aren't good for much of anything. I dilute the conditioner with 1/2 as much water, to help it penetrate better. Then I use it by the handful. All these brands are really cheap, so cost is not an issue. I do a scalp massage while washing, to remove any skin buildup (an issue only if you tend to get dandruff), then I repeat, to do the length once and the scalp twice in all.
Then I apply a moisturizing conditioner, like Elasta QP Intense or Hollywood Beauty Carrot Cholesterol. This would be a conditioner without any silicones (ingredients ending in -cone, read the ingredients list). Finally, I finish off with some Pantene Pro-V, and comb out while I'm rinsing.
Some people complain of damaging buildup from the silicones in Pantene Pro-V. To prevent this, I start my wash by wetting my hair with a mix of 1/2 cup vinegar in warm water at least once a week. I've never had any buildup problem.
I squeeze out my hair, then put it up in a towel. I take it down, comb again, then put it in a dry towel one more time. By the time I take it down, it's more damp than wet. I now put 2 drops of jojoba on my fingertips, and work this into the ends, and also the section on the back of my neck that breaks off short. This seems to prevent that "dry ends" feeling, and makes the hair even sleeker.
Sometimes I also add a couple of drops of jojoba or coconut oil the next day after wash, but if I'm wearing my hair up, I usually forget to do it until it's too late.
I'm hoping my hair will be tailbone length by January. |

You probably could leave it on overnight if you wanted to. Many people do this with great results. I personally don't because it requires putting on a cap or something, to not get the oil on my pillowcase. and I can't sleep if I'm wearing something on my head.
I condition with coconut oil once a week, applying it to dry hair. The shortest time I've left the oil in: about 1 hour. Longest: about 4, when I oiled my hair and went out to a restaurant with an oiled bun!

Your hair should be clumping into sections, but not drenched in oil. Basically it should feel as if you sprayed on oil with a mister. My hair is almost waist length, and it takes about a teaspoon and a half of coconut oil for me. I hope that helps you calculate how much oil you need. Jojoba is pricey but the cheapest way is to order it online from Cedarvale Natural Health. They sell it in bulk prices (approx $7.00 per 16 oz, which is hella cheap compared to health food stores. Local health food stores sell for an average of $8.00 per 4 oz!) and Cedarvale takes personal checks too : ) yay $$ )'```ara $).,`` %*,`r !,,!-- ,,)-% ! " $4

(1) Coconut oil should be used BEFORE shampoo in a CWC in my opinion. I wouldn't use coconut oil in a WCC because the coconut oil is too heavy to be removed by the last C. (2) If you have a greasy scalp, then you won't have to oil the scalp... I like to oil starting a cm away from the scalp and then work it to the ends. The first 1 cm of hair won't be oiled. It's a matter of personal taste I think, so try both and see how your hair and scalp like it. (3) if you want to do a leave in oiling, you'll only be using 1-2 drops of oil (a little goes a long way)
Good luck Anais $$ )'```ara $).,`` %*,`r !,,!-- ,,)-% ! " $4

Hi Renee
I deep condition with oils, going into detail about it in this thread. The Aussie 3MM has been really popular with long hair organic-philes so I assume it's a good bet. Haven't tried it myself though.. : P If your hair likes silicone products like Pantene and L'Oreal, I wouldn't stop using them (instead, clarify regularly to remove silicone buildup).
Sodium Laureth sulfate is the most hair friendly and is often formulated with cocamidopropyl betaine (sp?) or TEA something or other, which are both also gentle. Sodium Lauryl sulfate is the harsh one, and so are any surfactants that begin with "ammonium" such as ammonium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate.
Hope this helps :)

I don't buy mine at Walmart... coconut oil-76 (it's called coconut oil 76 because it melts at 76*F. The other one is coconut oil-92, but that one's too hard at room temp) My coconut oil is pressed especially for skin and hair, and the brand is called Spectrum Essentials. (not sold at Walmart) It's soft and spreadable, softer than butter. Maybe like room temp butter. It melts in your hands and your hair.
You could find it online too, at Cedarvale.net or Mystifyyoursenses.com
EKatherine buys a brand called LouAna from Walmart that doesn't have a coconutty scent, and it's in the vegetable oil section.

I guess it depends on the product. Jojoba online is really cheap, even with shipping, compared to jojoba in stores. Coconut may be different because it's also cheap in stores.
I oil my scalp only when I plan to shampoo it out momentarily. Oil should NOT be left on the scalp for days and days as a leave in because it messes up the scalp acidity

I have no idea how to help besides to tell you USE A CLARIFIER and a vinegar rinse and see if that helps. Vaseline doesn't come out very easily.
For everybody out there who is looking to oil their hair, READ THOSE INGREDIENTS CAREFULLY. COCONUT OIL SHOULD NOT HAVE ANYTHING BESIDES "COCONUT OIL" or "OIL OF COCONUT". THIS GOES FOR ALL OILS

Some other thoughts--
If the stuff you bought contains petroleum, then it makes me suspicious that it's for skin and not hair or otherwise badly formulated.
Coconut oil, the pure 100% kind, comes out even with a mild shampoo like Paul Mitchell. I'm not sure know how to get Vaseline out of hair because it's not something I've done before. You'll probably have to use something along the lines of Neutrogena or Pert Plus (just this once though because they can be harsh)
RENEE: If you have fine hair, you can also try jojoba or sweet almond oil. Coconut works for most hair types but some hair just doesn't like it. Give coconut a try first-- it's cheap and easy to measure solid. Liquid oils like jojoba sometimes make hair feel "crunchy", but that goes away if you're using it as a prewash. $$ )'```ara $).,`` %*,`r !,,!-- ,,)-% ! " $4

Hi Renee
Honey on both the scalp and the length would be good as a prewash. You said you have fine hair, right? Olive oil can be a little heavy. I'd go with sweet almond or macadamia nut oil--they're just lighter oils in general. And I know honey sounds very sticky, but it washes out well if you make sure to rinse at least a couple times. Honey is a humectant (moisture attractor) so often it does wonders for people's dry scalp.
The other thing about having a dry scalp is... to use a gentle shampoo. That means no Pert Plus, no Prell, no Head and Shoulders. ... Read your ingredient bottles and donate anything that has the word "ammonium" or "lauryl" in the second ingredient.
Hope this helps :) Anais $$ )'```ara $).,`` %*,`r !,,!-- ,,)-% ! " $4

I wouldn't give up on oiling. It's the Vaseline that you don't do well with, and NOBODY does well with vaseline in their hair. That gunk doesn't come out.
I'd encourage you to try again with REAL 100% coconut oil. Don't give up on it because of one vaseline product. Again, shampoo really well. $$ )'```ara $).,`` %*,`r !,,!-- ,,)-% ! " $4

I hope to get coconut oil at walmart....the one you said somone on here uses (wrote the name down somehwere). I got this new neutrogena triple moisture deep recovery hair mask today and tried it. Oh God...k...i was meant to leave it for 3-5 mins but i left it on for like 30 mins. When i washed it out, my hair felt so hard and thick and it felt sort of dry. So to get out what the stuff had doen to my hair, i used suave daily clarifying and i dont know what happened but t took me 15 minutes to rinse out the foam or whatever and my hair was a mess. I finally rinsed it all out then shampooed it with the NTm shampoo before fianlly using dove conditioner. This was the same thing that happened when i used the leave in foam so i guess that line is not for me. I use the shampoo though. I also got surge hair revitalizer plus 14 and it worked wonders. It worked as a detangler and my hair isnt thick and dries in like 30 minutes but this time, it was dry by maybe 10. Air dry I mean. Anyway, that was what i went through tonight and i just needed to vent i guess. Coconut oil...here i come!!!!!

The trick with coconut oil is to use it in moderation. Don't glob it on or it'll be hell to wash out. ... The appropriate amount for a person depends on three things, maybe more that I've missed: (1) hair thickness (how many hairs per square inch) (2) length.. obviously the longer hair, the more hair volume, the more absorption (3) % volume that your hair can absorb water or oil. .. "porosity" or absorption rate. Some hair absorbs more water or oil than others. Coarse hair, especially, absorbs lots. It takes less to oil finer hair.
And the right amount can be found with experimentation. I use less than a teaspoon and I my hair is slightly shorter than waist length. Sometimes less than a teaspoon.. I use less oil if I'm planning to condition with two separate products after washing (CWCC). Maybe two grams. (two cc's/cubic centimeters is a pretty close approximation)
If you do a first trial amount of... say, 2 cc's... and it's still too greasy after a wash and condition, then shampoo it out and try again with less oil. It takes a couple tries to find a happy amount.

Hey Everybody,
Thanks for posting... it's nice to see familiar faces :) Yeah, I think you can add honey to your conditioner, Renee. but I wouldn't put it all in at once and let the bottle sit for ages. I'd do it by doses: figure out how much honey works for you, then do a 1:2 ratio or a 1:3 ratio, etc... Mix a new mini-batch every time you hairwash. That way you can keep the honey in its original bottle.

I'd try these in order. ALL of these will help with dryness-- results will vary for your hair type. Maybe one or two of these will work better than the other. (1) CWC-- to add an extra moisture step (2) Honey-- a moisture attractor (3) prewash oiling, with a light oil like sweet almond or jojoba, or a very small amount of coconut oil.
That way you'd only spend what you have to. The cheap first C in CWC is V05 or Suave Naturals-- less than a dollar. If #1 works, do CWC for a few months and don't try #2 and #3 for awhile. If #1 doesn't work, move on to the next step.
I find this to be the most scientific way to experiment. Try one thing at a time so you can keep track of the good/bad results. (Once, I tried a buncha different things at once and I couldn't tell which one was helping)
Anais
my CWC routine: (1) V05 or Suave Naturals conditioner (1) or prewash oiling with coconut oil (2 cc's, as of two weeks ago) (2) Kirkland Marine Algae Shampoo from Costco (appropriate substitutes are Paul Mitchell Awapuhi shampoo or Salon Selectives shampoos. Contains gentle cleansers) (3) diluted apple cider vinegar rinse (weekly). 1/2 cup diluted in a 20oz soda bottle of water. (4) usual conditioner $$ )'```ara $).,`` %*,`r !,,!-- ,,)-% ! " $4

Oh i go to longhaircareforum.com like eevryday. Though one has to pay 5 bucks to subscribe or sth so i cant post messages. I just read what they have there and its been very helpful. I tried the olive oil and honey stuff but i didnt mix it with my conditioner and the honey was breaking my hair (thats how fine and fragile each strand is ). Next time, ill mix with with conditioner. I dont style my hair everyday. Its always in cornrows so i guess thats ok

Thanks cmsweet
Likewise, Mineral oil is a petroleum derivative and is also an occlusive material... Lanolin, petroleum, and mineral oil are ingredients that are inappropriate for hair and skin-- but manufacturers add them anyway as thickeners, and some add mineral oil while claiming it is non-comedogenic. I agree with cmsweet-- the marketing ploy is crap.
... and this is mainly because wonderful stuff like Shea butter, Kokum butter, etc... are so damn expensive for mass production.

k...hair disaster. i was trying the olive oil in conditioner, honey in shampoo when while using the conditioner when my hair became a tangled, hard, brittle, mess. i rinsed out the conditioner then used dove conditoner and it was okay again and went on to put on my detangler when it suddenly started getting hard again. so i used suave clarifying shampoo to wash out whatever the stuff had done to my hair then used tresemme cond. This is redken all soft for dry brittle hair anyway. my hair is already soft but not dry and brittle. i don't know why i bought it.....i will return another product to them for the 2nd time and 3 days in a row. oh btw, the stuff is not all gone. i guess i used the suave mainly on the right side so the left side is as hard as....and ive poured some oil to soften it...too tired to wash anything out again

Try one thing at a time... that way you can rule out what things DON'T work for you. Sometimes oils and other natural substances can react with the chemicals in hair products as well.
If the shampoo or conditioner contains proteins, then it can react with oils to make a brittle byproduct.
It also depends on how much oil or honey you are adding. Do keep in mind that fine hair takes less gunk. And it could also depend on how well you rinse, or the mildness of the product or lack thereof.
Just some things for you to keep in mind. I'm sorry to hear about your disaster.

Just thought I'd add...
Honey works best when used as a rinse or used with egg or olive oil, not mixed in commercial products. Store-bought commercial products aren't designed to work with natural and additional ingredients.
Honey already in storebought shampoo is normally done in very small amounts (Manufacturers adjust the ingredient formulation to make up for honey's effects on lather, cleansing ability, etc.. although the amount they add is so small that it doesn't make much difference. Honey is usually added at 3% or less of the total product volume).
Honey added by the buyer, at home, might mess up the formulation of the shampoo. Manufacturers don't plan for this.
Try honey and coconut oil as a prewash instead (rinse out before you shampoo. Of course, the coconut oil won't rinse out until you shampoo, but the honey will). Or mix honey with your dose of conditioner.

I think ill just forgo using honey on my hair because i remember when i mixed it with olive oil to try to deep condition, my hair started breaking as i ran the honey through my hair. I exchanged the conditioner for nexxus humectress because im already using nexxus therrape shampoo and i tried a strand test so i wouldnt have another hair disaster. It could also be used as a leave in.

I finally got the louana coconut oil from walmart. I put one teaspoon in the microwave, put it on my hair especially the ends. I left it on for 45 minutes because i couldnt wait to see if i would be able to get the oil out. haha. Anyway when it was time to wash it, i had my suave clarifying shampoo ready in case it was a disaster but it wasnt!!. I left the shampoo on for 3 mins and the condtioner on for like 30 mins. I couldnt stay up to wait for it to get dry so i put on a scarf (not cotton) to retain the mointure before i went to sleep. My hair wasnt as tangled as it used to be and i just brushed it now. What is the use of this oil on the hair anyway....as in can it be used as a deep conditioner? And oh...i dont want to brush my hair everyday so can i make it in cornrows everyother day? cos i wash my hair once a week

Hi Renee
Great to see you've had positive results with both CWC and oil.. It takes a bit of experimentation to find the right routine, and you've found positive results faster than most people. Oil is moisturizing for hair because it works the same way as scalp oils (sebum oil)...basically prevents moisture loss (because hair already has some moisture, just by itself)

so now what i have a problem with are my ends....it looks....all frizzed up. i trimmed it like 4 weeks ago and when i went to get some hair rpoducts at the salon, the stylist was like i need to trim my hiar...i just looked away cos i know most stylists are scissor crazy. It doesnt really look frizzed up..just curly. I dont know if its damaged or anything. So can i just put the oil on it without washign it out?

Hi Renee
Yes, if you feel like your ends are too dry, oil on the ends works nicely. I also wanted to add ... It's great that you only hairwash once a week. It minimizes friction in general because IMO the most friction occurs during hairwashes. I haven't gotten to that point yet-- I'm washing twice a week and still working on it! :)

Hi All,
I don't know much about chemical treatments. (In the past I have never dyed, permed, relaxed, TR'ed, curled, flat ironed, etc...) but lately I have heard that protein treatments are recommended before and after chemical treatments because protein will be literally removed during the processing... you'll want to "put some back in", if that's even possible.
Don't take my word for any of that. Claribuzz knows about chemical treatments if you want to give him a holler on the Asian or General board.
* * * One thing I do know, is that protein treatments in combination with oil treatments can cause brittleness. That's why I stopped using my protein shampoo when I began using oils. So it will have to be one or the other: the coconut oil for moisture, or the protein for softness or whatever else. I chose oils.
