Hi. I'm fifteen, and my hair is kind of weird.. it's sort of curly, but I can't do anything with it. Until I was ten or so I had really thick, but really straight hair. It started getting really frizzy, so I wore it up a lot. Now I wear my hair in a messy bun every day, without drying it (it usually dries by the end of school). When I take it down its curly, but I can't run my fingers through it, and its kind of too messy to wear down. When I dry it, its sort of wavy, but just incredibly poofy. It looks absolutely hideous and I can't wear it down.

Is there anything I can do to it so that I can actually wear it down? Maybe a way to dry it without it poofing up? It's still pretty thick, but I've had it thinned a few times, as I used to straighten it and straightening's easier to do with less hair. The last time I had it thinned was a year ago. Its getting kind of weak, I think it might be from being up all the time.  I'd prefer not to straighten it, because it takes forever and its kind of bland. Is there anything else I can do with it?

Hi Kate, some thoughts:

  1. Maybe consider growing it out? Curly and wavy hair will generally be more manageable as it's longer and heavier.
  2. Consider adding another conditioner to your routine. It would weigh your hair down and help the waves/curls become more defined.
  3. If you brush or comb your hair, I highly recommend stopping. Wavy/curly hair IMHO should not be brushed or combed while dry. Using fingers to detangle would be best.
  4. Growing your hair out would give more options (e.g. braids), if you're wondering 'what to do with it'

Hugs

You definitely need some sort of product in your hair. I don't know if your hair gets oily easy at the scalp, but if not you probably need a good leave in conditioner or something to tame your frizzies down as well as to moisturize as well. maybe you could try 'Infusum23 moisturizing' conditioner or those 'Frizzies' products like the hair serum or something. sometimes ppl use mousses or gels also.

Thanks for the suggestions.

When I wear my hair down, which is rare, I don't brush it and usually add some extra conditioner. I always thought it was kind of wrong to not brush my hair though, so I'm glad that other people don't either since it's all that works. I would definitely consider growing it out, but it doesnt like to grow much. My ends get gross pretty quickly after cutting. Is there anything I could do to help it grow?

My hair has a major problem growing to, and since I use to put relaxers in my hair, it's damaged it a little bit, but I havn't put one in in almost a year, and most of the relaxed hair is grown out out, i may have about 3 inches left of it at the ends, so my hairs grown more than I thought in the past year. Anyways, last summer i tried some hair vitamin pills to help make my hair grow and be more healthy, and they worked really good, i just havn't taken them in about 5 months, so my hair isn't growing so great now, but i'll start back soon. Maybe u could try some hair vitamins or something to help.

You should relax you hair if it is unmanageable this will loosen your curls and give you more manageable hair, after you get this done grow your hair out the longer the better it will keep your curls tamed and weigh your hair down eventually you will have beautiful waves. Thats what i did.

yeah, a relaxer will loosen your curls and make it more managable, but if u don't keep up w/ the relaxers, it can damage ur hair. But to have it some what healthy, i think ur suppose to put a new relaxer about every 3-6 months.

My hair is fairly curly and dry, I have found in the past that washing less often and sometimes only in conditioner gives my hair a shine and makes my curls more defined. I also put a leave in conditioner every day. I never use any hairdryers or straightening irons.

She wont really need to keep relaxing her hair ive had mine relaxed only once whih was last year if her roots are straight or fairly straight then the hair will weight its self down the only way she would need to re relax is if she had kinky or very curly hair on the top of her head, but make sure to condition it alot.

I'm kind of wary of relaxing, it seems pretty drastic. These vitamins for hair growth, though.. in making your hair grow is it just the hair on your head? Or do you end up with extra growth of all your hair?

By the way, I dont brush my hair, I use a wide afro comb, otherwise it gets frizzy, my hair gets curly if it is shorter and straighter when longer. I prefer it curly though.

My hair is the same way, except I have let my hair grow out. The longer it gets, the less poofy it is. I've found that it takes a lot of time and patience to get my hair to behave without chemicals or cutting it short.
To help grow it longer, try hair vitamins. Not every diet is balanced and they will help your hair.

All hair. They have yet to find a way to grow hair on one part and not others. ;)

Eee. I don't know if I'd really like having extra long eye brows and arm hair. :/

Rarely do they grow extra long, dear. You could always trim them if they did grow that way.

My hair will only get as long as my shoulder blades.  If your hair is really fine, don't count on it getting much longer than this, as it will fray or break off, there is just no way of getting around it.  However, if your hair is course or medium, you could probably get it really long.  I wouldn't relax it, but that's just me.  I actually will get a spiral perm every few years to make the curl more uniform and my hair easier to manage.
