Hey,
I was wondering if any of u curly headz new how to actually curl/wave thick straight hair using gel or mousse. Any other method that doesnt involve using curling irons (i dont really wanna damage my hair) would be a HUGE help.

Try this:

1. Shampoo hair w/product for hair type, texture & condition
2. Rinse & apply rinse out conditioner for hair type, texture & condition.
3.  Finish w/ cool/cold rinse.
4.  Towel blot to remove excess moisture.
5.  Separate hair into 1-2 inch sections.
6.  Apply mousse or gel to each section and then blow dry using round brush to help give hair bend and direct air flow DOWN the hair shaft from roots to the the ends.
7.  When each section is 80% dry, use fingers to roll the section into a big barrel curl or ringlet shape.  Pin the curl to your scalp.
8.  Move to the next section of hair.  Repeat.
9.  At the end you should have a head full of barrel or ringlet curls pinned to your scalp.
10.  Go back over each section and blow dry on slow setting with cool/cold air to "set" the curls.
11.  Let hair set in the rollers as long as possible.
12.  Remove right before you go out and "finger pick" curls into desired style or brush out to create loose waves.
13.  Finish with good hold hairspray

Other options:

1.  Set "damp" strands with mousse or gel and then roll with soft rag curlers from Conair or old fashioned strips.  Sleep on the set and in the morning you will have curls.

2.  Apply mousse to "damp strands" and then braid all of the hair into 3 strand braids.  The tighter the braid, the tighter the waves.  Separate hair into multiple sections and apply lots of braids which will give lots of different curl and wave patterns.

3.  Apply mousse to "damp hair" and roll with Velcro rollers.  Sit under a hood dryer which is much less damaging than using a curling iron or hot rollers.

Mousse gives a softer hold, gel a tigher hold.

IT WORKED! IT WORKED!
Yesterday was registration day for our school., and i wanted to curl my hair, so i tried the "sleeping with rollers" idea and it WORKED!!

I got so many compliments! My mom even said i should permanently curl my hair, it looked THAT good!

1st- i had a shower so my hair was wet, then i towel dried them
2nd- i seperated my hair into 8 sections and applied gel
3rd- i put the rollers on my hair
4th- when i was done putting on the rollers i sprayed my entire head with hair spray
5th- i slept with the rollers on. It was really painful though, because the rollers were big, and made out of plastic. But i survived, if i didnt, atleast i wouldve died with curly hair

Thank u soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much!!!

much luv-((hugz))

Hi,

WOW.  Totally cool.  Thank you soooooooooo much for sharing.

By the way....you might want to experiment with soft spongy curlers http://mp.hairboutique.com/product.asp?ProdID=104908&Ctg ID=382

instead of the big plastic rollers.  Also....you might try the soft rag rollers from Conair.  They work really well and are very soft to sleep on.  I do it all the time when I want beautiful waves that last. http://mp.hairboutique.com/product.asp?ProdID=104883&Ctg ID=382

You may be able either the sponge rollers or the rag rollers at the local Walmart or Super Target in some cities.

At any rate...keep experimenting and keep those curls going.

Glad to hear you survived and didn't die but at least you had awesome curls.

Thanks again for letting us know.

Karen

Actually, the idea, was half yours and half Karen's.
You said to sleep in with rollers, but Karen said to use gel/mousse.

Thanks for your part of the suggestion though, !!

Goodness, thank you sooooo much, Karen! I've never had such controlable waves. This was the first time I've ever done the whole product thing. I'm still clueless as to how to scrunch. Could anyone help me with that?

The Asian Invasion:

I usually use L.A Looks Mega Hold. It works SO well, it lasts the WHOLE day! Along with the gel, i use Aussie Mousse, in strong hold.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Actually,

Last night, I thought I would get funky and test around with different things. I used an ultra-strong hold gel (for my thick hair, it usually takes that much to keep it up), then I used the rag roll instructions found at Hair Boutique, and combined them with Anais's sock curling instructions.

I split my hair into 8 sections and combed gell through one section. Then I twisted the section tight, but loose enough so it doesn't start collasping onto itself. Then I put the end of my "twist" into the middle of the rag, and proceeded to fold the rag over my end. After that, I carefully rolled my twist upwards into a cinnamon roll shape. I tied it off at the top, and slept on it. The next morning. I took out each section one at a time; each time, I finger styled the section before taking another one out. After all of the sections were released, and my curls were finger styled.. I had extremely controllable waves/curls. And with the gel it held all day!

Thank you all again! I'm starting to get over my hair blues. For a long time, I considered getting my hair completely cut off because I was so bored with either stick straight hair or curling iron curls. So I'm so excited to experiment now!
