i have wavy hair, not exactly curly- but some of the ladies in here are saying that they only wash their hair with shampoo once a week or something like that... and that they do the condition only wash all the other times they shower- but how does your hair not get all greasy? is your hair really that dry? or do you just live with the greasy look on the top of your head- cuz i know if i go more than a day and a half without shampooing by hair looks really bad on top. i wish i could "train" my hair to need to be washed less often. thanks

If you shampoo your hair all the time you strip it of it`s natural oils so your skin produces more oil to compensate. That is why it gets all greasy,
Try cutting down your shampooing gradually to just twice a week or less and on the other days use conditioner to shampoo your hair just rub it into your scalpand hair and rinse it out.
You can also add lemon juice or white wine cider vinegar to the conditioner to cleanse your scalp more.Try and get hol of Curly Girl by Loraine Massey as it explains things better,Your hair will start to be in better condition and your curls will behave better too.

You can train your hair to make less oil. Just quit washing it as much . As gross as that may sound to you right now (I thought my hair could never go a day inbetween washings..let alone 5, like it does now) your hair will make less oil because you wouldnt be stripping your scalp of it every day.

For a few weeks just wash every other day. If your hair gets really greasy the second day, put some corn starch or baby powder on your part and other oily areas. That will blot the oil. Once your hair gets used to being washed every other day, try going 3 days in between washings, and so on until you can go as long as possible without washing it.

I do know about condition-only washings, though...I`ve tried but it has never worked. But here`s a link that tells you how to do a condition-only washing:

so- to those people who do only wash their hair with shampoo once a week or whatever- what do you do on the other days? do you just rinse your hair with water in the shower or not get it wet at all?

Lovely Turquoise girl,
You don`t need to shampoo your head every day but you need to wash it every day with water. You know me, we have chatted online before and you know I have healthy hair halfway down my back! I wash my hair every day but shampoo 4 to 5 times a week. My daughters have very healthy hair and they always shampoo every day but they are teenagers. For people over the age of 20 or 25, I think you need to "rest " your hair once in a while, don`t over shampoo it, let nature and your natural hair oils work. But you can shampoo more than once a week. Try 4 to 5 times a week. And use good products, Avalon, Giovanni, Paul Mitchell, Avida, etc. when choosing your shampoos and comditioners!
Good luck sweet lady!
Love,
Johan

Hi Turquise girl,

You could rinse with water on the other days if you have oily teenager hair (like myself)

I don`t get my hair wet at all inbetween shampoos because the water here really sucks. So I figure the less contact my hair has with this crappy water, the better off it is. This one of the main reasons I shampoo 2 times a week at most. I would like to get one of those water filters for the shower, but I am 16 and can`t afford stuff like that. :(

Just do whatever works best for you.

Hey! I`ll have to agree with everybody else here- I only wash with shampoo every 2-3 days. I`ve been doing that for a few years, and altho it can get a little greasy after about 3 days, it pays off in the condition of your hair, especially if its wavy or curly. Too much washing can really dry it out- there`s a reason that God gave you those natural oils in your scalp. I usually rinse it every night & that minimizes the grease factor (cuz NOBODY wants that!). Good luck to ya!
Love, Ingrid

the reason i am wondering is because i wash my hair everyday but i use a moisturizing shampoo and only shampoo at the roots. however, it seems that even just this(letting the shampoo merely rinse over the ends which are drier is making them even worse... and i do use conditioner but it doesn`t make it better.) i really wish that i could go without even rinsing my hair in the shower because i think we have pretty icky hard water here. thanks for your help and i would love for even more people to answer. would getting a water softener or a filter really help the condition of my hair? i`m starting to think the water has something to do with my hair being weak and dry(even though i treat my hair SO good- no heat styling, no chemical processes, etc.)

oh yeah, and when you do shampoo after those quite a few days- what kind of shampoo do you use? moisturizing? normal? or do you need to use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of the dirtiness that has build up over the days? thanks- i`m very excited to try this!:)

Darling Turquoise girl,
You seem to have so many questions and some confusion about what to do with your "weakened" hair. What you need to do is save a little money and go out to the best hair salon in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and have them analysis your hair and offer expert advice, and then let them cut, condition and style your hair and tell you what products to use. Maybe Rocco Altobelli or some high class salon like that! And while you are at it, go to one of those places where you can also spend a day getting pampered, you know, full body massage, facial, nails done, and your hair cut and styled. And don`t be afraid of getting a very short hair cut if they suggest it to improve your hair, since short hair looks great on women anyway, especially with beautiful long earrings, the right makeup, and a sexy dress! But you need to talk to experts! And pamper yourself a little! Take a day and have a relaxing, sensual, experience where they take good care of you and you are treated like the beautiful, precious, princess that you are! Take care of yourself darling! Be good to yourself, take care of your health, and allow yourself to be pampered a little! Love yourself and you will love others!
A hug and a kiss! Love,
Johan

Hey Turquoise Girl! A good cleansing shampoo that I use is Neutrogena Clean. Be careful about using a cleanser tho cuz they tend to clean your hair TOO much & it can get dried out- I`d suggest only using one if you use a lot of styling products and get buildup from those. Otherwise, I don`t think that you`d need a strictly cleansing shampoo. I use a kind called Citre Shine moisturizing shampoo- it works great for me.
So, good luck to ya, TQ! Hope this helps!
Lotsa Love,
Ingrid :)

If you use clarifying shampoos they would strip your scalp, causing it to produce more oil even faster. Use gentle/mosturizing shampoos.

And yes, the hard water is what`s most likely damaging your hair. Even just a final rinse with cold soft water could really improve your hair`s condition.
