since asian is a big country i think we should divide asian hair into like at least 2 catagories. one is oriental (chinese, thai, korean, japanese) and others (Indian, Malay, Pakistan ....) becoz these to groups have entirely different hair and differennt hair needs. So how?

Hi Claribuzz,

I am willing to create separate boards but I need volunteers for moderators. If you or anyone would be willing to take the Asian Hair categories under your wings...email me at shelton@hairboutique.com and I will set up the new boards.

Best wishes,
Karen Shelton

Claribuzz, can you explain the differences? Is it that the texture is different? I'm curious.

Yes there ARE A MAJOR differences between asians.
Ok, the first group ( Japanese, Chinesese, Korean, and Thai descendant) have straight thick hair that is shiny when healthy. It is usually black, some have it in dark or light brown. Some even were born with wavy hair or they are minority group. Other ( Malay, Pakistan, India) have slighly wavy hair. It has lots of body and usually black but sometimes brown. Some of them have wavy or extremely curly hair ( like me). But then mutation occurs ( X men 2 ?????? ) some Malay, Pakistan Indian have poker straight hair and some japanese or chinese or korean or thai have very wavy or curly hair. So thats why we need different group.

Lets say, for the sake of simplification, that the categories are:

(1) South Asian
Indians, Pakistanis, etc

(2) East Asian
Chinese, Japanese, etc

I generally find the South Asians to have coarser and more porous hair than the East Asians.

The East Asians, as Clairbuzz says, also tend to have poker straight hair compared to South Asians.

I can talk about traditional hair care in the South Asian tradition but know nothing about the East Asian traditions.
As our hair types are so similar, it would be good if we could share ideas on this board and learn from each other.
For example, I recently met an Indonesian lady who told me that her grand-mother has always "washed" her hair with coconut water. In South Asia, people use coconut oil as a pre-wash &/or leave-in conditioner, but don't use coconut water for washing.
I shall try the coconut water washing when the jelly coconuts get cheaper in the late summer.
My Korean buddy gave me a wonderful recipe for seaweed shampoo.

I think we have a lot to learn from each other, and as long as we are clear about what specific hair type is being discussed, it can only be for our collective benefit.

wow. that is interesting, I never thought of it that way. According to the distinctions, I'm in the East Asian category, but with a mutation. My hair is slightly wavy, but black. Definitely not like the typical straight hair of East Asians.

Not to get too political about this, but would Pacific Islanders be in the East Asian category as well? I've slowly realized that my hair may be due to a mix of East Asian and native islander.

I would put Pacific-Islanders in the South Asian category, myself. Their hair is thick and wavy.

PP, to be honest, we are all such a combination of racial ancestries that tying any individual down to one category is highly dubious.
Yes, some people are classical representatives of the Japanese or Indian hair type, but I am seeing more and more variations on my travels.

I love this diversity and blending. I think it increases beauty in the world.

Lets just agree that all Asians are welcome to post on this board and share what they know and what they do. No one should feel discluded because the don't conform to one or the other type.
