Hi, my name is carrie. you might recognize my name from the formal hair board--I have the same thread over there. I thought I might start it again here as there are a lot of people asking for hair help and I find it easier to help people if all the questions are in one place. If you need any kind of hair help, just ask. My specialty is styles and updos, but I can usually answer other kinds of questions too. Feel free to ask. Ta!

You could try using a heavier conditioner just on the ends and leaving a bit of it on. That might weigh it down enough to stop it from flipping out. And hair products don`t have to be expensive--special FX makes a good straightener that`s cheap and chemical-free. I found it for a buck at mcfrugals (which is now biglots, but either way you probably don`t have one nearby so nevermind). For a night out, you could try this:
1. Put half of your hair into a messy bun
2. Divide the other half into two sections
3. Twist both sections upwards and wrap them around the bun
4. Pin it all in place, leaving the ends loose and spikey
5. Spritz with hairspray

Could you please please please e-mail me at ashlee87_05@yahoo.com w/ some pics and/or instructions on some updos for homecoming?? I have not quite shoulder length layered hair. It`s also fairly thin. I`d prefer somethin kinda spiky and fun, but curly will work too. My homecoming is this saturday, so help by thursday at least would be MARVELOUS. Thank you!

1) Divide hair down the middle
2) Separate the top fourth of hair from the rest and twist both sides back
3) Combine the two twists to make a small bun at the crown of your head. Pin it down.
4) You should now have 2 sections of hair. Divide both in half
5) Take each half and twist it upwards towards the bun. Wrap it around the bun and pin it there. Do this with all four sections
5) Spritz with hairspray

There is an article in this site called (I think) 15 minute prom updo or something like that. I think that would be perfect with spaghetti straps.

Hi I have ring ceremony on December 6th and I need help on what to do with my hair. I am asian, have black hair with golden brown highlights, and it comes down a little above my mid back. My dress is spagetti strapped, red with a black sheer top on it so the whole thing looks like a dark red/maroon, and has black flower designs all over with glitter. If anyone has any ideas, how to`s, or pictures please send them to AnjelBaybe04@netscape.net

Hi all,

Basic Easy Starting Point For ANY Updo - Ponytails

One thing to remember is that the absolute basic updo move is a ponytail. The reasons that updos look so different is that ponytails can be up high on the head at the top of the crown, at the middle of the head between the top and bottom of the head or at the bottom. There also can be multiple ponytails.

Dressy Style #1 - Basic/Easy Updo W/ Curls

The easiest of all updos is to put your hair in one of the basic ponytails and then wrap one strand of your own hair around the elastic holding the ponytail in place so that the pony is covered with hair.

Then you have many many options. You can divide the ponytail hair into multiple 1/2" strands and curl each strand with a curling iron or hot rollers. Let the rollers cool and then carefully remove the curls and pin into place. Viola, you have a curly updo. Make the curls bigger or smaller depending on the size of the hot rollers or the barrel of the curling iron. Remember 1/2" barrel equals small curls and a 1" or larger barrel will make large or "barrel" curls.

Dressy Style #2 - Basic/Easy Up/Down Do

Another easy dressy hair style is to make a 1/2 up and 1/2 down do. This is very simple. Take the hair from either side of your head by your ears and brush up to the scalp into a "skinny" ponytail. Tie off the ponytail with a clear Blax or one that matches your hair color. Take a curling iron or hot rollers and curl the ends to have "bouncy curls. Wear the rest of your hair down and curl the ends. You will have a soft curled up/down do.

Dressy Style #3 - Ballerina Bun

Again....start with a tight ponytail at the top of your crown. Tie off the ponytail with a Blax that is clear or the color or your hair. Or use a "hair friendly" elastic. Please nooooo rubber bands.

Once you have a firm ponytail then take the tail of the ponytail and wrap it tightly around the elastic band to form a tight bun. Pin the tail to your scalp and then add anchor pins around the perimeter of the bun to hold in place. Decorate with hair accessories that sparkle.

Dressy Style #4 - Nape Bun

This style was very popular at the recent Academy Awards. Brush hair back into a very low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Twist the ponytail into a flat bun. Pin and viola...you have a nape bun.

For additional ideas please look at the Prom styling pages here at HairBoutique.com at:
http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/promstyles.htm

New styles are being added constantly.

Hope that gets you all started on your updo quests.

Best wishes,
Karen Shelton

Hi Cait,

Thanks for listing the info on Blax. I had never heard of them until a few years ago and now I can't live w/out them. The thing I love is that they are so easy to use, feel like rubberbands, but don't harm the hair like rubberbands and I don't feel bad about cutting them off if I am playing with updos.
:-)

Best wishes,
Karen
