Formal "Victorian-type" style for long hair!

Hey all! I am looking for a hairstyle for a historical ball I am going to next Friday. It''s not like a prom - everyone dresses in period clothes, and it''s more formal. I''m dressing in Victorian style, and would love to do my hair in an appropriate style. Doesn''t have to be authenticly Victorian or anything, just not modern or funky. I have long hair, almost to my waist. I was thinking about sleeping on curlers the night before to get some curls/ringlets, but is there anything else I can do? Flowers, ribbons, having my hair up some...I''m not sure what. Oh, and I would kind of like to have at least part of my hair down long.

Here's the hairstyle I had yesterday when I felt like doing Victorian.

This is very much like what you're trying to do, except you would need to get sausage curls to hang or be pinned on as well. The only problem is, I'm not sure if you can get everything you need in time for Friday.

But anyway, here's what I did.

What you'll need:
Hair rats are what provides the volume you see, while giving structural strength to the style. Get at least two in each size.

Curly synthetic weft to match your own hair color, or human hair weft that you can curl for the top. (Optional; depending on the thickness of your hair and the look you desire, you might want to put a switch for a larger bun, or make some controlled curls to pin on.)

First, you need to snap together the rats into doughnut shapes. Brush or comb your hair out from the hairline in all directions. Separate a section wherer you want to center the rats and put it into a small ponytail. Put the first rat on and pull the ponytail through it. Pin the rat to your head with the small hairpins by running the hairpins through the rat, your hair, and then back into the rat, essentially weaving them together. Pin another smaller rat on top of this, again pulling the pony though. The whole thing needs to be very secure.

Next, pull up sections of your hair to the top, pinning them temporarily, until you have the whole mass of hair in a tail at the top. Twist into a bun, and pin securely in place.

To apply curly weft, cut a piece about 6" long. Pin around the top of the bun, and pin the curls into place.

To apply sausage curls, pin or clip one or two at the top. Either allow them to hang down loose, or pin the curls into place down your hairstyle.

You might want some sort of filmy scarf to protect this while you're traveling. And you also should consider having someone else drive you, or at least be very careful getting in and out of the car.

What era within the Victorian Age were you thnking of?  The differences between the 1850s and 1890s are quite vast.
