Personally, I don't like to sleep with my hair in a bun. I have done this before, but I've found that a bun isn't exactly the most comfortable thing to lie down on. I only sleep in a bun now if I am deliberately doing it to set my hair. Any of the sleeping styles the others have mentioned are good it your hair is dry, but my hair won't dry overnight if I sleep with it up. What I do when my hair is wet is just sleep with it loose. I push it so that it falls behind my pillow over the edge of the bed, so that I don't have to sleep on it. This keeps it from getting too tangled or otherwise messed up and makes my sleep more comfortable as well.Erika
I flip my hair over the pillow so that I don't sleep on it. I have been doing this for many years and I don't wake up with tangles. this stems from my high school years when I had to get up real early to go to school (I am NOT an early bird) and it saved my hairstyles. Just a light comb and I'm on my way.

Hey, maybe that's what hair bonnets used to be for back in the old 'little house on the prairie' days. I always wondered why they slept with bonnets... maybe it was more common back then to have long hair. Maybe you could find one or something similar and do one loose braid at the back and tuck it under the bonnet. And if hair bonnets are loose then secure it with pins. (what's a good modern term for the hair bonnet anyway?)
