on scalp/off scalp bleach

I was hoping to see some good responses on this topic as I came here to understand the difference myself. I am going to a high end Aveda salon to get highlights in my hair on a regular basis. I have been there 4 times now and thought that I could resolve my "root " problems by now with my "colorist" as that is the only thing she does. I am a dark brown natural color and am going blonde (first color- highlight) with some lighter brown as the second color (lowlight) but I am very unsatisfied with the amount of root left as I am leaving from the salon. I was thinking that she must be using an off the scalp bleach. I am wondering if that is what would help me to get better results, using an on the scalp bleach...?  I like to pull my hair back as others on here have said, the roots show and it is not pretty to see that....even directly following having my hair done.  I am very frustrated and have explained to my colorist that I feel there are to many roots showing...

I hear your frustration all day.  The reason you have longer roots is because she is applying the bleach then foil then leaving it right? What she isn't doing it letting that process then going back in the right amount of time and applying more bleach to the roots. Basically you want to apply at different times because your root area will activate faster than the rest of the hair from scalp heat or body temp. So either shes not sure when to apply to the root area to give you full coverage or she simply doesn't understand what you want. I would try another girl at this point. Be very clear you want your roots to match and not leave the salon lookin like you havent been to the salon in 6 months.
I promise not all "color specialist" are bla there are some good ones out there but remember color specialist doesnt mean there good at there job there heart needs to be in it to. =)

For beng the one who PAYED someone to teach you something I wouldnt let that sh** stand with not answering your questions. Dont be afraid to be firm with your teachers. Trust me when i tell you this ok, When your done with school and in a salon you will see one every salon does things different. Different brands different techniques etc. A lot of what you will learn in a salon they said in school was wrong so to me school is just to get your license and gain the basics. Anything "specialty" your going to learn from other stylist as well as the extra classes "brands" hold those are always fun to go to. Learn about those from your local beauty supply usually.
 On the scalp bleaching & Off the scalp.  OIL BLEACH & GEL BLEACH are BOTH forumulated for ON THE SCALP BLEACHING.
Root touch ups and all over bleach usually always on scalp. highlights can be on scalp as well just not all at once like i just explained to Kimba. To cover your own a** though make sure you find out the correct answer for your test because like i said whats done in the real world of hair is different from school. I swear the test changes lol ;) try slipping into some of the extra classes offered from brands as well Redken, scruples, im sure wella, matrix etc. they get down to more detail about there product to which helps you understand more.

Thank you for that reply. If I understand you correctly....after all of the foils are in place , she should be able to go back and  basically separate all of the foils and dab at all of the roots with the bleach last(  and get them ALL) since the roots are next to the scalp and the bleach is activated by the heat of my head...? is that correct? 
The  biggest reason I selected an aveda salon was because the girls there are suppose to be very well informed and taught; it is an upscale salon. Also, from what I understand, the Aveda products are plant based and suppose to be less toxic to both the environment and our hair.  They tout that each one has their "specialty" if you will...some color, some cut and some do perms . Thus
it supposidly enables them to focus more on becoming the best at continuing to stay in tune and hone their skills. Probably just a total
speil...right..?  LOL  You get what you pay for so to speak and I thought I would not try to be cheap on my hair since it is important to me and I desire fine detail and want it right. I try to be dedicated to working with my salon professional in hopes that we could get past this hurdle. I guess not......We only have two Aveda salons here in my city and I left the other one initially because my experience there was bad.....but she was also new. The  amount of roots that woman left on my hair caused me to go back for a re-do as I was not paying for hair that  looked like it needed serviced and I did not go back.  So I guess you are telling me I need to find another new girl who understands  to go back and add more on scalp bleach to the roots all the way to my scalp  after all of the foiling is done correct?

You are very correct in understanding my post. Yes anytime you bleach out med length to ends of hair you have to apply the bleach to that first then go back about 15 to 20 before shampoo and apply to root area to get an accurate matching color.
I do not do that much with Aveda as I do not use there products much. I have heard good things about them and bad but that goes with every product and honestly bad reviews imo are usually from user error.
I would try another girl or when you go in ask for a manager or someone who can give you what you want. Highlights that go to the root lol. Just explain your last few bad experiences and say hey if you guys cant get it right this time i will find someone who can do it right,
The thing with "specialist" as well is they may have done more hours in school for color correction or cuts or whatever but the thing i have learned about the color correction specialist is most are afraid of bleach. Bleach can be a scary thing but if the stylist respects it then you should never have any problems.
I have seen some really bad hair cuts to. Go in say i want a trim and a trim to me is maybe an inch of hair but some people come to me after the last person "trimmed" there hair 6 inch. I mean seriously. There are good ones out there just have to find them.
I know some guys who are 2 year certified master chevy mechanics and I wouldn't let them touch my bicycle let alone my car lol you know what i mean.
