Annoying Flippy hair

I have a problem with flippy ends ife always had short hair and wanted something different so I grew it longer but the ends are realy flippy especially on the side's it make's my head look like a mushroom. Y~Y What can I do about it i'm in collage so it speaks for itself I'm broke >< so I can't realy buy a straight iron, I also went to the saloon yesterday and asked to put some style in my hair but that didn't change much eather I NEED HELP!!! ;~; my hair is driving me nuts and I don't want it short again what to do!!! :(
