Home Highlights

So I have a full head of salon highlights, some of the highlights are lighter than others, and some are really dark blonde. My question is, is it a good idea to buy a home dye, or streaking kit, and pin up my hair and do random highlights with say, a pastry brush? Granted I'll do a strand test and all. I feel like it would be doable. Has anyone ever attemped doing their highlights like this? Is it harder than imagined, and easy to screw up? It's weird cause I would never put one through my whole hair, but this just seemed like a cool idea.

Also, would it affect the dye my hairdresser puts in next time? It would probably damage my hair, too right?

A pastry brush I haven't tried, but I have used a mascara wand.  That works okay.  I find the best thing is to use my fingers...believe it or not.  Then wrap the little strand up in foil. I am not sure what color your colorist is doing, the highlights may or may not be visible depending on the amount that you do.  If you get them too light though, and the colorist uses an ash green dye on your hair, they may turn green.  However, it will fade.  I like L'Oreal Excellence Creme lights--it's formulated to be used on already dyed hair.  Hope this helps.

I think it should be ok. I have tried this with my brown hair and it's not as easy.But if your hair is already blonde then they will blend better.

Well,dont pick a highlighting kit that says stuff like "dramatic" or "frosting"

I'm going to make an appointment at the hairdresser, and after if I think I want lighter highlights I'm definitely going to try them myself. If I wasn't bleaching I'd have no problem with dying my hair at home, I did it for about a year. Grr blonde is so annoying.

Will do. I will try L'Oreal Excellence Creme lights, as per Rebekah's suggestion.

For a strand test, do you mix the whole amount or just a little bit?

I would do just a little in a seperate container so you dont waste the product.

Doesn't it go off once you open it, though?

I dont think it does...I think it is only activated after mixing it together (most say something in the instructions about throwing it away after it has been mixed and set out for an hour or something)

I don't use the whole box, I mix a bit of bleach and save the rest for later.  Works fine for me!

I've never mixed bleach (though my mum did for me when I was about 13) should I just follow the directions on the box and I'll be fine? I don't know anything about protein fillers, but would it be a good idea to use one as well (mixed with the bleach?)

I dont know about using a protein filler WITH bleach.You could use it before bleaching though,sorta like a pre-treatment. I think the directions say to put it on damp hair and leave it on about 15-20 minutes.

Can you make a rec? I'm so clueless and don't fully understand what they are or how they work.

Ok,the protein fills in weak spots in the hair,making it stronger,so it's less likely to get damaged when coloring or bleaching.

I did the highlights! Subtle but noticable. The colour is good too, I was sort of expecting orangey tones, but they turned out nice and pale. I'm totally going to do it again. I see potential addiction. LOL

Currently sitting here with more bleach in my hair, lol, I love it. I might post a picture when I get it how I like it.

I'm scrared od brassiness though, I'm toning like crazy but is there anything else I can be doing?

Ally this thread inspired me.I was gonna wait until spring and color my hair,but decided to he11 with it and put in some highlights last night.(the kind you brush on with the wand)

They are also subtle,but it's amazing how much better it looks! I'm going to keep gradually adding some in until I have light red and blonde highlights all over.Definitely addicting!
