OMG, I never ever thought this would happen to me.

I went to the hairdresser on Saturday, I've moved recently so I've only been to this guy twice before but both of those times he was all like, 'wow, you have such lovely hair'.  Well I'm not sure about that but I did like my hair, it was about bra-strap length, dark and pretty shiny (it is still dark and pretty shiny!)

So I wanted about 2 or 3 inches off to make my hair look all perfect for the Christmas parties that are coming up (and it's my birthday next week).  So, hair's washed, head massaged, magazine in hand, all that jazz, he pins up my hair as usual and starts cutting.  Nothing unusual about that.  He hands me a piece that he's cut, it's about 2 inches long.  I'm not really one of those people that freaks out about getting an extra inch cut off (I guess because I had so much hair!) so I'm like, okay, whatever.

Then someone came into the salon, I think it was his sister, and he was like, 'do you mind if I go say hello for a second', I'm like, no worries, whatever.  So he popped off and I carried on reading an article about Charlotte Church (I <3 that girl!)  A few minutes later he came back and got on with cutting my hair.

Soon after that I like looked up into the mirror as he was re-positioning my head and I noticed that somewhere on the floor behind me I could see a massive pile of long dark hair.  I was like, oooh, someone's going short (in my head not out loud).  But you know when you look in a mirror, you get the distances all wrong?  Well, I'd done that.  Slooooooooooowly, I realised what in the world was happening and my hand flew up to the back of my head.  He nearly cut off one of my fingers!  But not before I had felt my newly cut VERY SHORT HAIR.  All that was left long were the two sections of the very front of my hair that were still combed over my shoulders.

I was so shocked that I actually started laughing.  The hairdresser had no idea what was going on.  I was like, WTF have you done to my hair?!?!

Turns out that he had cut someone's hair in the morning that was almost exactly like mine and they'd wanted a bob.  He'd trimmed the first section of my hair then unpinned the next one over the top, gone off to talk to someone and come back, got mixed up and started cutting the bob.  I guess it was kind of my fault for not paying much attention to what was going on for a few minutes (damn Charlotte Church article, lol!)

Anyway, he was almost done so he had to finish up and cut off the rest.  Luckily he'd *only* cut as far up as my neck so my hair is just past the bottom of my ears now and he did finish it off really nicely but FFS!  I've been growing my hair for two years now and it had just got all nice and long!  Now it's shorter than when I started!  GRRR!!!!

I didn't go into work today because I was a bit annoyed about it all.  Oh well, better bite the bullet and show up tomorrow.

I'm sorry your hair got so much shorter than you had planned!! But I must say you're taking it really well, I still haven't got over my haircut (like six months ago now). Hope you're happy and learn to love your new style though!

Trophywife in your case there's not much that you can do other than go back to the salon and explain. Push the issue and maybe you could get some free services, refund, products, conditioning treatments, etc?

Personally if I were you I wouldn't go back to that stylist. That is just unacceptable. The stylist must have his head somewhere else to not remember that just minutes before he cut his initial section to establish his guide. I feel for you I really do but there are bad stylists out there and from reading this thread it sounds like you we're the victim of one. My wife had a similar experience long ago. It will grow back but it will take time. Hair only grows 1/2" inch per month on average. To go from Bra strap length to above your collar bone is kinda crazy (thats about 8 inches in length or approx 16 months of growth) unless that is what you requested but it's clearly not what you wanted. If he wasn't sure when he returned he could have easily looked on the floor at previously cut hair or just ask you and say I'm sorry I forgot how much did you want taken off. I don't see how you think that it could be your fault. I would think some adult with half a brain would at least be responsible enuff to remember what they we're doing just minutes ago.

I would be looking for a new stylist if I we're you. Someone who understands the difference between a half and inch and half a foot. It's totally unacceptable and I feel for you hun. Best wishes on finding a better stylist in the near future.

If your anywhere near upstate, NY I'd be delighted to have the opportunity to be your new stylist.

Well, I posted in the long hair forum and complained... Basically my hair was down to my elbow and I wanted a trim. The hairdresser decided that a trim was layered hair with the longest shoulderlength and the shortest 1 dm... And instead of the blondish highlights I'd had before, she bleached it... It's still shoulderlength as I have to cut it all along to regain the thickness (I hate having it layered!), but about 1 dm has grown out now... I know how hard it is to get short hair just like that, and it takes ages growing it out again. Just because of that stupid hairdresser I'll have to wait about three years before my hair is back to normal, so I don't go to hairdressers anymore. Many here have had really bad experiences, read their bloopers and try to feel better! I'm sure you're gorgeous in your new style too! Pampinetta38685.5265162037

!  That is horrendous!  Sounds like your hair was beautiful before; I think I would've punched the woman, I might not have been able to stop myself.  At least mine was only a mistake (but still infuriating...!)

Are you growing your hair long again now?
