Wedding Hair Prep Work

Hi. I have done hair for several weddings now and have a few more coming up. However, I never seem to be able to get the smooth finish that I want. Does anyone have suggestions for prepping  the hair before updos and products used during and after styling updos? Please help! Thanks a bunch!
